I was not in a band during the 60s or 70s, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Here is a cool mega website dedicated to NorthWest bands up to the '80s

http://pnwbands.com/

I was in a band called "Northern Lite" in the early 70s, my first pro playing band. We were booked into high schools and colleges all over Washington. Good times and good $$$$!

Played in lots of amateur bands in the late 60s

Yes, I was in a band named "NightWatch" during the late '70s. We played a lot on the Camp Pendleton Marine base in Oceanside, CA. The money was pretty good back then and when we played the officer's clubs, we got free drinks. I think we used to clear about 80-90 bucks a night back then. We would play 3 or 4 times a week. You had a different class of Marine back then too. In those days, toward the end of the Vietnam war, there were a lot of "Join the Marines or go to jail" types. It made for interesting gigs. We actually met the lead guitarist for the Ventures, who, after getting in trouble with the law, was forced to join the Marines!! Anyways, I'm still giggin' and still enjoy it thoroughly. We basically stopped gigging in the '90s. We all got married and wives don't normally take to regular gigging; especially in night clubs. As we got older though, the wives basically says it's OK. Guess they don't think any groupies would want a bunch of 50 something old geezers. :x

chucksolo69: Most of the go in the Marines or go to jail guys were long gone by the late 80's, considering that the US Embassy in Saigon fell in April of 1975. But, having been at Camp Pendleton in 1972 I can assure that the clubs used to get exciting at times. They even had go-go dancers. Wel, they were really strippers, but were billed as go-go dancers. The shuttle buses between the base and Oceanside used to get a little wild at times also. Semper Fi.

Here's an example of the wild times we used to have at Camp Pendleton in the 70's and 80's:

Back in the early 80's our band was playing gigs out at the enlisted men's clubs on the Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Corps base. We setup early that night so we could relax with a drink before show time, and noticed tension as soon as some of the troops started entering the club. The racial groups slowly divided (not a good sign). Well, an hour into the gig a white Marine came up to me and told us that at 10 PM, the whites and blacks were gonna fight it out. Yup, exactly at 10 PM a full blown race riot erupted in front of the stage. We were dodging chairs, glasses and pitchers as all races joined in the melee. Soon, the doors to the club burst open and the riot police entered and began hitting Marines with their truncheons, completely oblivious to those who were not combatants. They did not care if a Marine was innocent or not, they got a billy club upside the head!!! Anyway, after the club cleared out, we heard a few pops outside and a full bird Marine colonel with blood flowing from his forehead and holding a loaded .45 auto pistol high in the air, burst through the door and yelled, "Get down NOW, because they're shooting out there!!!" Well we all dove for the floor and waited it out. Soon, a squad of armed troops came in and hearded us and our gals into a small brick room and stood guard over us, M16s ready, until they deemed the danger was over. We were finally allowed off base at 3 AM. Our keyboardist, who was a waitress during the day missed her shift and was promptly fired. The manager didn't believe her when she told him what happened. My brother was suspended from school (he was 17 at the time) because the vice principal didn't believe him either. Anyway, for such a large scale riot, nothing ever appeard in the papers. I'm glad I got out of there unharmed!!!!!

Reminds me of being stationed in the PI in the mid to late'80's. The last good 'liberty port'. Too bad that the present generation will never experience that. Good thing that most wives will never hear about it.

Did you ever buy your strings in San Clemente? I was the manager of the House of Music on Coast Hwy. at that time. :)

Oh, man... yeah! The first serious band I was in was in 1975. We called ourselves Anthem. My brother and I played guitars along with the usual configuration of bass and drums. I sang... which was funny because I really couldn't sing. But, I was the only one at the time that would do it.

Although we never made it out of the garage, that band was important to everyone in it. In fact, the drummer and bass player have somehow played together in different bands for 30 years now. And when ever my brother and I venture out to see them, they call us up to do a few of the old numbers.

Sometimes it even sounds good...

No, never bought strings there as we were based in Oceanside and used to get all out stuff at Oceanside Music Supply. However, after gigs out at the far reaches of the base, 63 area, 52 area, etc., we always used to stop and get breakfast at the Howard Johnsons in San Clemente.
