Have you ever made an original song and found out later that it sounds similar to another song. I made a song but sounds similar to All Apologies by Nirvana. It uses the same technique where you use the open string as the bass and the fretted string as the melody, and at the very end it repeats a certain set of lyrics just like all apologies. I know that the idea of reapeating a certain set of lyrics at the end over and over was created by john lennon in his song Give Peace a Chance. But the overall tone of the song I made and the song that nirvana made is similar. It's in a different key and everything, but I feel like I'm copying. Should I try changing it, or should I leave it the same?

There are limitations to follow to keep from seriously commiting plagarism but even Paul McCartney said that most hits come from re-writing someone elses song.

I actually saw that video. :D But mine is not that similar, the only thing that's similar really is the technique of using the open string as a bass note and the single fretted note as the melody. Is there anyone out there who knows an artist that uses this technique for a whole song.

I thought I came up with a real cool Boogie Groove one day. When my friend got home from work and heard me playing it he said, "Man, that's the song from the Kit-Kat commercials!"

I once wrote a song using a certain chord pattern. Then Boston came out with their More Than a Feeling song using the same pattern (for the "mellow" part) and that shot that down.

I once wrote a great uptempo tune and then realized I had copped the Movin' On Up theme song from The Jefferson's.
