Well...I suppose your sister needs to read "The Stratocaster Chronicles''
to understand what a miracle of capitalistic entrepreneurism the present company is....up from the ashes like a corporate Phoenix, so to speak.

I had in my hands today, a new MIM Stratocaster. Quite a remarkable guitar. For a kid who had his nose pressed against the glass over 50 years ago, wishing for the unattainable '58 Stratocaster the range of product and price points available to the aspiring is a credit to the company.

Leo Fender and his colleagues were great innovators in evolution of design and engineering in the musical instrument field and responsible for providing great talent with wonderful tools to do many wonderful things.

Not just our heroes mind you, but every single one of us who gave or received something positive from their use.

Rapidly approaching total Corporate sell out worse than the bad old "CBS era"

We have MIA, MIM, MIJ, CIJ, CII and coming soon, CIOM (Crafted in Outer Mogolia because hey labor is cheap over there). All in the name of producing a lower cost instrument and increasing Corporate profit margins. I'm not even going to mention the "S" word (yes I am... STARCASTER! {not the cool old dual humbucker hollowbody})

It's freaking shameful the lengths that Fender is going to in order to sell guitars.

Yes we live in a Capitalist country.
Yes Companies deserve to make a decent profit.
But when the price of the profit is the devaluation of the product heritage I think it's going too far.

MIA's, MIM's, and the higher end Squiers are all pretty nice.
But when you start getting into the "Crafted in . . ." stuff and you can really tell the difference.

I'm not sure that Leo would approve.

I'll refer to the words of Ted McCarty when he ran Gibson. Because it's true-
They're an amp company that makes guitars.

Now I'll add to that--they make great amps, and some great guitars.
And I have one of each--and have played several examples of each.

I'm not at all a Fender loyalist, and I own more non-Fenders than I do Fenders...

For me, though, Fender instruments are traditional - and that's something I like. They're traditional in the same way that most Gibson instruments are traditonal, or the way that Martin instruments are traditional.

Looking through my collection, the most "extreme" guitar you'll see is the acoustic with a cutaway.

Fender isn't any sort of emotional thing for me - Fender represents quality instruments that fit my style. There are plenty of other companies that make quality instruments.

I think this is a great question. It's obvious it means so many different things to so many different people.

I think to me it means diversity. Not in the inane politically correct form of the phrase. What I mean is the diverse impact it has had on music in both image and sound. and style.
For example: Look at the impact that Fender has had on the blues, rock, country, even heavy metal, rockabilly. You name it, Fender has been there.
Not only has Fender played an important part in the evolution of the sounds of these genres, but look at the image. You have all the diverse images (style of dress, etc) from the players from these styles, each giving its own flavor. Fender fits each and every one of those styles.
Picture Jimmy Vaughan's image compared to Jimmi Hendrix's image. Now compare those of rock in general to those of Jazz, Country. Each has a distinct style, sound and flavor.
I can't think of any other company having such a powerful impact or fits so damned well.
Rock On!
