Hi everybody,

First, a quick introduction. I'm a not-especially-brilliant guitarist who has chronic GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome). Since I started playing in 2001 I've bought:

Squier Stratocaster standard (2001 Chinese)
Tanglewood Odyssey electro-acoustic
Tanglewood folk electro-acoustic (can't remember the model number)
Gibson Custom Historic LP '58 Gold Top
Epiphone Dot Studio
Rickenbacker 4001C64 bass
Rickenbacker 360-12
Fender Electro-acoustic 12 String (can't remember the model - a mid-range one, not expensive or very cheap)

All this going through my VOX Valvetronic AD50VT (apart from the bass of course, which has its own small Marshall bass amp).

The perceptive among you will notice the distinct lack of a decent Fender electric. You'll also notice what kind of music I play - the bass, the Dot Studio (clue - similar to a Casino) and the 360-12 kind of give it away.

Hence my question....
If I want to get as pure a traditional strat as possible, what should I go for? I want a decent one, but preferably without having to kill anyone to get the cash. And for the Fender die-hards, no, selling the Gibson is not an option. :)

I definitely want a strat or a tele, but which should I go for? I have a Squier strat which sounds surprisingly good through the VOX, so maybe a Tele is the order of the day. On the other hand, I still need a really decent Strat, because although the Squier is nice it's not as nice as a proper Fender.

So, if I want to play everything from Buddy Holly to Jimi Hendrix, what should I go for? The reason I like my Gibson and bass is because they're both a historic re-issue - I'd kind of like the same for a Fender as I want as close a sound to that 60s vibe as possible. I know there have been several changes to the Tele/Strat line since the early 60s, hence why I'm interested to see if there's a reasonably-priced reissue? Were the 50th anniversary strat/teles the sort of thing I need?

Also, why on earth is this forum time limited? As I live in the UK having posting limited to Mountain Standard Time is a bit useless to me. :)

Any advice as to what would best complement my current guitars?

Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to the forum! I would suggest the new American Standard. A good guitar for all types of music.

I wouldn't put that Squier in the "I already have a strat" slot. If you want a good strat, get at least an MIM, preferably a MIA.

Tele's are great too. Neither is "better", if you like both sounds get both guitars.

Get both, eh? Well, that's the long term plan. :)

Thing is I'm the kind of man who doesn't like to do things by halves so if I get a standard Strat/Tele it'll be a MIA one. Not only are they apparently better built and sound better, but I suspect they'd hold their value much better too should I ever need to sell up (touch wood, I won't).

How close is a new American Standard to the original strat sound? Don't they use noiseless PUPs (which are rather harder to overdrive and sound a bit different, I think...)? This is why I'm tempted by some kind of reissue that uses the original-style PUPs...

theres a cracking midnight blue clapton customshop on ebay for £1300. Its only in berkshire. Other than that i'd get a deluxe, seriously. Whilst they may not be vintage correct they are the best guitars out there outside of the customshop and they do everything.

With only a few mods you could probobly get it to go to tesco's for you. :D

Those are very good suggestions Niki! I agree with the Deluxe and the Clapton sounds like a winner! Just did not know how much money he wanted to spend! 8)

He said he doesnt want to do things by halves :D. When i was 17 i was in some deathmetal band. As a band we went to see morbid angel, a band of some note in that genre. I collared their guitarist before they went on to pick his brains a bit. The one bit of sage advice he gave me was, 'if you want to get anywhere you've got to have the gear'. Its always served me well. People see you've got pro gear and they treat you with a bit more respect, providing you play decently.

I agree with that advice and you won't have the need to constantly be modding or upgrading!

Welcome Ian! You can't go wrong with any MIA Fender. Have you tried any of them out?

Also, the amp will have a lot to do with the tone and the vibe. You can get a HUGE amount of sounds from a good strat.

The Valvetronix amp is ok, but if you think any part of the tone you're looking for is lacking, it will because of that amp, not from a MIA or MIM strat. A guy that's so much into guitars and tones should consider getting another amp or two, or one good tube amp that fits your style. In general, a jack-of-all-trades rarely does any one of them perfectly.

Just my two cents.

The MIA Standard is Fender's new standard...kinda what the past heroes would have played...the Standard Strat. Otherwise Fende has plenty of reissue options if you want that specific era vibe in MIA & MIM (The Custom Shop influenced Classic Player ‘60s Stratocaster is really nice & with friendly $.).

....along with a quality classic vibe (lots of cool Fender combos) tube amp., should do the job.

Might as well go all the way for the right tone and get the 57 twin tweed amp! I can attest they (amps) do make a lot of difference in your overall tone! 8)
