I am completely confused as to how to apply modes. I have read my books on music theory, searched for every example I could find, and I still don't understand it.

I keep seeing references to using "a mixolydian sound" and other references to using modes, and it's not in the context of chordal music. It's in the context of melodic music. I want to try it.

The answer to the following question would help me a lot, even knowing that it's the wrong kind of question to ask will help:

Let's say I am playing "Happy Birthday" in C major and I want to translate it to use mixolydian mode. What do I do?

Thanks for the help.

I'll take a stab at this, but I admit that I'm no music theory major. If I'm not mistaken, you're thinking wrong about the use of modes as scales. I believe that, in your example, the melody of Happy Birthday is already in a particular mode so you can't play another mode over it without it sounding odd. I'd think even playing over just the chords of the song in a different mode would alter the entire melodic character of the song. I think you'd have to determine the mode of the song first and then improvise in the mode.

Somebody more studied will correct me if I'm wrong. Good question, though.
