I don't know--I've always wanted to play guitar as a long as I can remember.
I don't know why--I just wanted to. I don't know anyone else like that--so I'm not sure where it came from.

for me it was the first time i heard Layla by Clapton and heard Pride and Jot and Texas Flood by SRV. those songs made me want to play a fender strat.

I'm 41 now,but got bit by the music bug around 12-13 years old. At about 15 GOOD (imo) 80's metal started taking off and I was hooked on music, metal especially. I was heavily into sports and my parents would'nt get me a guitar so I never really played. Married at 25 and finally at 27 after years of my wife/high school sweetheart knowing I always wanted to play guitar she surprised me with one. I came home from work on Valentine's day and instead of finding her on the bed she had a Seagull S-6 laying there and said "SURPRISE, Happy Valentine's day! I know you always wanted a guitar so here it is! " Needless to say it wound up being a GREAT V-Day. Ironically I got my first electric this past July and I' m loving it, although I'm still not a very good player. I do have a lot of fun with it though! :D

The first time at about the age of 14 (circa 1966) when I found out how popular guitar players were with girls. It didn't help. Maybe that was due to the fact that I wasn't very skilled (still ain't).

I started off singing in my school choir in grade two, took up flute in grade six, horn in grade nine, then started electric guitar (thanks to Guitar Hero!) at 25 and classical guitar a year later.

While I wish I hadn't started so late, learning to sing and learning other instruments first has given me a good sight-reading capacity that I would never have had if I had started with electric. The flip side is that I'm only now really learning to play by ear. It takes some getting used to if you come from the sheet music tradition, that's for sure.

I started playing Guitar Hero. Playing on the harder difficulties just was not satisfying enough.

Hello Excess,

Back in the early 60's
with the Beatles invasion
got me interested.

I was lucky to have neighbors{adults}
who pointed me down the guitar path.

Cheers.

I too in the LATE 60's era...my dad brought me home an old Gibson Electric hollowbody and a small amp from a guy that owed him some money. I used to get in so much trouble at night for not being in bed when I was supposed to be.

It happened on Sunday, Feb. 9, 1964 sometime after 7:00p EST. I was 8 1/2, but it would be 3 more years before I actually had my own guitar.

And like Biloxi, it didn't seem to help me with the girls.

^^ What he said. Only I got a electric bass 4 years later,

Started playin' standup bass in 66 school orchestra. Wanted to play drums but the music teacher said "We don't need any more Ringos". Wish I would have stayed with stand-up as well

All worked out fer the best 8)

When I was a kid at junior school, back in the early sixties, I could only see myself as the worlds greatest soccer player.
Then these older kids came into our classroom and the teacher allowed them to set up their gear and when they had, they started bangin' out this stuff they called Skiffle. That is what I think, made me buy ( or my dad ) my first acoustic guitar and I've always looked back since.

I first got a harmonica for Christmas. I's asked for it because I had heard a group called "The Harmonicats" playing on the radio (around 1960). Within a year or two I was given a ukelele for Christmas, when I really wanted a guitar. My buddy had bongo drums and our voices were ok, so that was our first "band". It was around then my parents forced me to take piano lessons. I got up to, "For he's a jolly good fellow", and couldn't take it anymore. After all, I was expected to use TWO hands for that piece! Finally my guitar arrived, (Christmas again). It was 6 string (nylon) folk guitar that I played to death. I could play every folk song there was. I bought myself a 12 string when I was about 16 - still have that beauty! And last year, I finally bought a beautiful Mexi Strat. I've wanted one for about 35 years. The wait was worth it.

Phew!! Long winded bugger, aren't I?

Cheers, Gridlok 8)

I remember knowing I was going to play one since I was smaller than a Dreadnought's Lower bout. My Dad played guitar so it was kinda like seeing your parents drive or cook, and knowing you're gonna do that someday.
