I know the reason why I don't buy a lot of music anymore. The cost. I will never subscribe to a music service. I don't like paying for something that I will never own. I don't know why more artists just don't handle the business themselves via a web site.

I was never a big fan of The Grateful Dead, but I did admire them for letting their fans record them. Playing was their bread and butter, not the recording... which I'm sure Warner Brothers just loved...

I think I know the answer to that, though. Most of today's so-called artists are only good in the studio where they can be Pro-Tooled to death. I watched the Grammy Preview show for a laugh the other night and actually cringed when the Foo Fighters played "You're So Vain"... (And I thought they were fightin' the foo...)

Back in the day, I used to buy at least 4 LP's every week. Why? Because they were priced under $4.00...

Surely it has to start at source. The Far East is where most piracy ( of any kind of counterfeiting) is done, and for all the gas blown out of various policing mouths nothing is really done.
The most worrying thing about piracy is where does all the good money go,
laundering money from drug and human traffickers?
I am sure that law enforcement round the globe can make a big dent in many operations but I'm not all that certain its high on the agenda.

If I understand you correctly, there's already several subscription services out there. I subscribe to one that gives me unlimited downloads of a database of over 3 million songs. The only catch is that I can only play them on my computer. They're DRM protected. So I can't move them to another computer or share them in any way. I pay $10 per month for this.

I agree about not owning what you're buying. Tethered downloads don't have much of a future IMHO.

I'm not a big Country fan but I'll watch the awards shows. It's revealing to hear these stars without reverb, delay, compression or pitch correction. They sound so . . . ordinary.

I used to buy mono LPs for $2.98 back in the day. $3.98 got you stereo!!

Just to clarify something here... I meant to say that I don't buy a lot of music like I used to. I do pay for it. But, I also believe that I should have the right to make a backup... That's why my vinyl collection is still around. That is also why I will never subscribe to listen to radio. That's how cable tv started... and look at the money eating monster that has become. I can't believe I'm paying to see stuff I used to watch for free as a kid.
