I'm looking to make my first efforts at recording my material. Can anyone recommend some good, affordable computer interfaces? Any other recording tips would be appreciated. My budget is 150-200$.

I’ve had a lot of luck with my Lexicon Lambda interface. Good but not great pre’s, and clean sound. Depending upon how many inputs you need, there is also the smaller Alpha and the larger Omega. I’ve seen them on sale recently, too. In the past I’ve used m-audio interfaces, but I encountered conflicts. (I’m running an HP Pavilion a814x with a Realtek soundcard). The Lexicons come with Cubase LE which I didn’t care for. The interface was not as intuitive as ACID Music Studio (also on sale) or even ACID Pro. The package includes the Lexicon Pantheon reverb plug-in which is terrific . . . but you can only use it with Cubase. It won’t work in any other software. Several of us have tried.

I recommend the Lambda, but I use Sony software.

I use M-Audio Fire Wire Solo recording interface.
Inputs: Guitar, Microfone with phantome power if needed, S/PDIF in and output, output left and right for speakers, 2 unbalanced line inputs.

Control knobs: loudness, 1 gain for guitare and 1 for the mic. and clip gauge.

Cheers :D

It never ceases to amaze me how little attention recording threads receive in these forums. I would have imagined this would be an important topic for the majority of guitarists looking to post their tunes and/or plug their songs. :?

I completely agree with you. Unfortunately, I go the hardware route, and so am unable to comment on computers and software.

Apart from that Sibelius program you mentioned the other day, that is. I have an earlier edition of that one: highly recommended!

Cheers - C

I didn't like Cubase LE, possibly because I was used to something else. If you're looking for inexpensive software, Sony has a lite version of ACID Pro called Acid Music Studio. It sells for about $70, but there is a rebate deal where you can get it for half price. Also, there is a program that I heard good things about but never used called Audacity. It's free. Like the record labels are learning, it's hard to beat free.

Audacity is a good, cheap, quick and dirty piece of software. Adobe Audition is pretty cool as well. You can get a fully legal OEM version for like $70 or less on some sites.

Check out the demo videos...
http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/

For hardware/software - I've used different interfaces at home, mostly USB based. I have a quick set up at home, where I record to a stand-alone digital multi-track that saves them as wav files. I transfer those to my computer and edit/mix them in Audition, sometimes Audacity for quick things. For drums, I'll just lay something down in Fruity Loops to the same BPM click-track I recorded the original to. Sounds complicated, but I can blast through two guitar tracks, a bass track and do a drum track, transfered mixed and saved as an mp3 - all in like 20 mins or so. Great set up for quick demos I need to send back and forth.

I use a BR-864 and CuBase for DAWS and I really like the MOTU interfaces.

i use adobe audition sometimes but there is like 1 second or .5sec delay when recording so if you overdub some tracks if you play in time it records it out of time. anyone else have this problem or know whats wrong?

Sounds like a latency issue. Google has a lot of helpful links to resolve. Good luck!
