Post subject: how to play guitar thru computer

Can i play electric guitar thru my computer, essentially using the computer & speakers as an amp? do i need any special software? i do NOT plan on recording anything. do i use a standard cable with an adapter to fit the 1/8" line in plug?

any specific products anyone can recommend? i just did a bit of looking, looks like you haveta go about 100 bucks before you get anything descent.

I'm using an EMu-404 but that is a full sound interface, does a lot more than what you are looking for.

Not sure if it is possible to just get a 1/4 mono to 1/8 stereo cord and plug straight into your PC's sound card. It might be, but I've never tried it.

There are plenty of options depending on exactly what you want to do.

Try something like Vox's JamVox if you want to try amp modelling and effect chains

I think im gonna order one of them Behringer links...not out much if it doesnt work out. Nice and small for using at the office and carrying around.

Yes, that will work (a 1/4 standard guitar cable to 1/8 mini adapter) and if you want to record you can use windows sound recorder for a quick and easy short jam. :wink:

I believe that SMark, who posts a lot in the pickup area has put up some great sound clips of pickups using that method.
