U play when u want to and don't when u don't. Guitar is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. If it isn't, then you need to take a break. Or instead of always trying to stretch and grow, take a month and just "noodle around" having fun on the guitar.

I usually try something very different from what I've been playing. E.g., I'll pick up an acoustic and play some straight forward old school country. If I've been playing too much mellow jazz, maybe I'll kick the volume up a bit and do some vintage rock. And so on.

Back in working musician days, with my band, we tried to avoid burnout by not locking into any particular style or type of music. Officially, we were a AM/FM cross rock cover band but we tried to mix in different styles and types of music. We even tossed in a few big band classics done in our own way. For us anyway, it kept the job interesting. Most audiences seemed to get a kick out of that odd out of the blue song or two we'd toss in as well.

But when all else fails and I can't even seem to get 3 chord songs I've played for 40 years right ... back to basics. I may take a day or two off, then start up again with scales and timing exercises. Before long, I'm out of the rut and running again.

The solution for me has been two guitars that are very different in feel and sound (OK three with the acoustic).
When i'm in a rut with my Strat I pick up the Les Paul and it's like it's all fresh and new.
