I was wondering what do you guys do when you get burn-out or stuck in a rutt? I play everyday, but there are times when nothing goes right. IIt can last a week. I do notice that if I play through the rutt..on the other side I make progress. I start to think..why bother..why not use time more constructive..etc. I am sure this is a common thing and would love to hear what you guys and gals do at times like this.
Peace

I put the guitar down and don't pick it up again until such time that I'm once again, "inspired" and/or no longer overly sick of hearing myself.

I walk away from it until I get the urge to pick it up again. This could take days, weeks, or even months.
It is great when you get back to it.

It's not supposed to be a chore, so I'm with the others who just wait 'till they feel like playing again.

I used to play quite actively many years ago with a folk group. I also experimented with recording on my 4 track reel to reel. Then, for whatever reason, I pretty much gave it up until last year. That's when I finally got my Strat. I'd never played electric much before, but I was always in love with the stratocaster and it's sooooooooo easy and smooth to play that my love is completely re-ignited.

So there's no time limit. Like the others say, pick it up when it feels right.

Yeah, my answer is pretty much the same. I'll set it down for a while, listen to some tunes or watch music dvds to get inspired, and then pick it up again when I feel more motivated.

Personally, the best insurance against any "hobby" burnout is to have a number of them.

While guitar playing is important and fun, sometimes it sort of does not come easy or go well. In those instances, 'have found it constructive to read, write, draw, scale model, do woodworking, or do something exercise-ly...

...not force guitar playing, until the magic returns.

+1 to that -- Mostly days for me, but I know what you mean. For me, I get a really killer tone. And when I start to think it is not that great, then that is my red flag telling me that I am fast approaching the time I need to put it down for a while...

I'll go to youtube and search for lessons for things that I dont' do with my guitar, like tapping or pinch harmonics or crazy Tom Morello-ish noises. (I'm a Tele picker). By the time that I'm frustrated with trying to do that stuff I am ready to get back to the way I normally roll.

longest burn out i've suffered is 2 days, phew !!! :)

I think it's because I do other things like play golf, watch football (the real one !!) and my mind is normally occupied with running a business

Ah it happens to everyone.
In only a week while my gear was out for repairs I got out of the habit of practicing daily.
Need to kickstart the motivator, just pick it up and start playing again.

I share your pain man. Usually, when my tone's outta shape and my fingers are telling me, "no more," I'll run through a few scales in a few different positions (kind of like stretching for athletics), try again, and usually it'll be a little easier and cleaner. Then, I'll run through a few more scales (I use musical scales as warmups and cooldowns, you could say, I'm obsessed with perfecting them... not sure why...) and put it down for the rest of the day. Even then, I still try to practice in my mind. Sort of like mental preparation. It's kinda OCD, but that's how I roll I guess! Then, when I feel like playing or hear something I wanna play, I'll pick it back up.

I'm going through it now.
Whenever I get like this I just do something else for a while until the urge comes back. Overdosing anything will get to you.
