I've played them and there isn't anything wrong with Crate amps in general. They aren't high on "cool", and I think that's what gets guys bagging on them. Most have probably never played one and are just "parroting" what they hear from others. They are good solid amps.

There's nothing wrong with Crate amps...A lot of times certain gear or company's get bad reps because there are a large number of uninformed and ignorant people who go to harmonious gear websites start hating on one particular brand for what sometimes may not be legitimate or based on any fact. Crate used to be one of the amp company's that players of hard rock and metal could look to for getting the sounds they want. Then somebody got a Mesa Boogie, and while it may be better than the Crate, they proceeded to bad mouth Crate, then other people who either don't know or have any experience with the 2 amps for some reason jump ship with whoever said Crate was bad. Then newbies come along, and see all this Crate, or any brand for that matter, negativity, and just automatically assume that Crate is bad, even though it isn't bad, it may just not be what the person who said it was bad was looking for....

I guess what I am trying to say people, I'll just get to the point, is try it for yourself. Reviews and stuff on the net are good for reference and research, but when it comes down to it, you need to see how it works for you and make your opinion about it. People have too many issues and perceptions these days that this guitar or that amp is only good for this kind or style of music. WRONG...How many people out there today would say that the Flying V is a strictly metal or rock guitar? Many, but then show them a picture of blues legend Albert King playing a Flying V well before many of them were born and well before there were 500 metal genres...Music is an artform, you can do whatever you want however you want to do it. Music is not like sports where you may need to use a certain ball and adhere to specific rules. So your friend may have an opinion, but you need to go out and make your own opinion...Opinions are like butts, everybody has one, but you need to decide if what comes out of theirs is also what you want to come out of yours, or if you want to make your own decision about what comes out of your own behind. Just like this whole rant, its just my opinion, and you can either believe or not, or perhaps just take it as initiative to go out and see for yourself....

Does it surprise people that a manufacturer makes both low-priced products (that oten get bad reviews) and higher-priced products (that could actually be used by professionals)?

Check out the Crate web site. They have "artists" who use them

Well then, as he was previously mentioned, I guess you consider Billy Gibbons not to be an artist then?

I don't know if he likes the term "artist" or not. I think it's a funny word to use for those Professional Musicians. I can hear Billy saying, "I'm a rock 'n roller, man."

No insult intended!

I had a Crate Palomino V32 tube amp that had one of the best clean channels I have ever heard in an amp in that price range. The drive channel was just okay and I never could get used to the boomy reverb. Fender's amps spoiled me for that. I ended up trading the Palomino in for a 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue and I have never looked back.

I've never said there is anything wrong with crate amps, just personally, the ones I've played haven't been as versatile or as well sounding to other amps the same price on the market (or at least here in 'rip off' Britain).
They are well produced amps and have a kind of cool factor like Marshall but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for and Crate amps around my budget just haven't sounded too great than to others.

I feel stupid after that comment I had made as players like Billy Gibb' plays with them but as a bassist, i think they're pretty poor amps from what I'm used to playing with and as a guitarist, they were al right amps but I didn't like the versatility or the tones I was looking for at the time but like I said I'd be happy to use them to warm up with or recommend to anyone else who wants a decent starting off, gigging and recording rig but they werent quite 'me'

I tried out a Crate V50 at a new music store a while back and I thought it sounded pretty good. That particular one was made in Vietnam. Christmas 2007 I received a guitar lesson as a gift and the instructor had a Crate solid state 65 watt amp (don't remember the model) that sound really good. Since that was the first time that I had play on anything but my Frontman 15G. Decide then and there I need a different amp. I ended up with a Blues Jr. because it seems to fit playing in the house better but I still have to keep it cranked back on volume. It will play loud and like it.

Had a Crate GX-65 through high school, sounded good with my Strat, and it worked well for the heavier stuff I was playing in high school, did a few high school party gigs with it, worked well with a speaker cab under it.

Recently went up to a Marshall AVT150 Combo, and for the country/blues/classic rock I'm doing now, it's a much better amp for the style. Sounds good with my Strat, with my Tele, and with my SG.

Amps (Much like guitars) are all preference. If you prefer the Crate sound, get a Crate. The fact that 10 years later, I still have my Crate amp, it still works, and there's no major damage to it (I am missing the knob that goes over the reverb control) , says a lot for the amp company.

Take YOUR guitar to a local music store, or a few if you have to, and try out the different amps for yourself. A 65 watt or so in solid state will get you through home practice and a few smaller gigs. Find YOUR tone, not what someone else is pushing at you.
