I think Crate amps are good, depending on which model it is, though I haven't bought one since the early 90s...What I really like are the Blackheart Amps that are made by Crate....

If the amp you like is a Crate, then that's all that matters. 8) Mike

Yes! Like a couple other amp makers, Crate has come out with budget priced Chinese-made all-tube amps. They have a "V" series of amps under the Crate brand that I would like to try out, in particular the V33H, a 33 watt (4 EL84 power tubes) head.

According to my favorite Music shop...

Crate is no longer Crate.
They have been bought out by Solonado,
The recent flood of cheap Crate amps is drying up and they will be back in the shops under the Solonado brand name.
Not sure how this will affect the price of these Chinese made amps, they were quite a good bang for buck for a while :)

I do not believe that Crate has been bought by Soldano. Crate is owned by LOUD Technologies, who acquired the brand when they bought St. Louis Music:

LOUD's more recent news items say they still own Crate.

Soldano and LOUD are both in Washington state, though.

There's the problem, you never know where the guys in the Music Shops are getting their info from :)

In any case the Crate V18 and V33 are incredibly well priced when they are available.
They had their last Crate V18 on the floor at 160$cdn which I think is around 100$us.

Would have bought it if word of imminent downsizing was not floating around the OL.

All opinion. If you want mine, I think they sound like crap. Not bad for a thin practice tone, or for that style, but I don't like them at all. They sound cheap to me and have no balls or real substance to their tone. At least, to me...

I agree.

When you start comparing features and prices, that is when you can pass a better judgement.

Some of the high-quality Crate amps like the Shockwave are REALLY nice. Can't say the same for their lower-quality products though. Kinda muddy sounding, IMO.

I have been playing on Crate amps for over 20 years, tube and solid state. I love them. I get the sounds I need for what I play. I recommend them to anyone who asks. Of course I do not play in a band anymore and I only have a 65 watt practice amp for now. I have never played on their stacks so I am not sure if they are as good as their practice amps.

Maybe after Billy gets a few more gigs under his belt

he'll be able to lose the Crate set up for a "real" set up.
