Welcome to the Lounge! It is good to have you here!

Personally, I started out with an acoustic then moved to an electric. I play mostly rock and some blues so an electric was the obvious choice. Of course I am still a newb at guitar though.

I have an MIM Strat and an MIA Strat and their both good in their own way. As a first electric guitar I would get one MIM, you won`t be disappointed. You can always move up from there if you feel the need to.

Some great advice for the OP, as always 8) My two cents, I would say go for the MIM Strat. I started off with a semi acoustic, and a few electric imitations. When I finally got a MIM Strat, my playing and enthusiasim took off. It's a fantastic guitar for the money, you won't regret it dude.

:) The MIM's are well made guitars that play and sound good.
:D The MIA's have better electronincs and a higher level of finish refinement (they are nicer)

If you have the money to spend I say go MIA. You will never regret buying the best guitar that you can afford. But I didn't date chubby chicks and still won't drink "fizzy yellow beer" either.

Acoustic! Do you want to be a singer/songwriter? some wussie folk musician? Go electric, way more fun to play with way more sonic capabilities.

Wow, mthorn00, you really like to spark controversy don't you. Ask any reputable guitar teacher and they will tell you that an acoustic guitar is a must for a beginner. My problem with learning on an electric guitar is it encourages the creation of "Guitar Wankers."

First guitar? i'd buy a squire tele. Their more than good enough to learn on and their uncomplicated when you have to string em. Get a strat in a years time when your sure its what you want to do.

How does learning on a acoustic make you a better player? Because you focus on chord playing? You can do that on an electric too, its called discipline. :D

Because it helps the student focus on learning how to play music and the instrument as opposed to the user wanting to be the next Eric Clapton and learning a bunch of "monkey see monkey do" riffs right off the bat and foregoing the correct way of learning the instrument and music in general. I've alway said that if a person is really interested in music he/she should at least learn the right way. Too often young kids wanting to emulate their latest "guitar hero" want to jump right in and get taught a bunch of riffs not knowing why they are playing what they are playing. They then try to play in a group situation and when asked to play a chord or note, you will get the reply "Where do I put my fingers for that?" Classic "Guitar Wanker" syndrome. You see this most often when young players start out on an electric guitar.

That is exactly what I intended to say. Sorry if if that was not clear.

I'd go with acoustic for its' simplicity - no cord, no amp, no power required. You can play it anywhere, anytime. Because of this, you can learn on it more easily, more often. Just pick it up and play it.

I also recommend NOT getting an electronic tuner. The more you use your ear to tune, the more practised and skilled you get at it. If you use a tuner all the time, you become like me with my cellphone. I no longer remember any phone numbers because my phone does it for me. (I think it's called laziness.)

My 2cents.

wow lol
thanks a lot guys this is awesome!
after reading all these i made a decision i think is in the middle haha
i'm going to buy the acoustic that i've chosen already, yamaha slg100s, as well as a mexican made strat
for the strat choices i'm throwing it up between the buddy guy sig, a splattercaster, or just a mim 62 ri if i can find one
i'm not very fond of the telecaster, i really have no interest in them, i was considering early on looking into a vg, but after actually looking into it i just don't think it's something i'd like to start on
im suuure im gonna get some interesting comments in my choice of not acoustic/acoustic lol
i've looked into a lot of acoustics to, and although at first when i knew nothing it was just like, alright taylor or nothing you know?
anywho due to the spots that i am basically confined to play in this is just going to be the best choice for me, having the advantage of throwing my bose headphones on and just do it all without being to loud to everyone else is perfect right now
as i get better i definately see myself looking into more acoustics with "solid tops", i know there will be a serious difference and that will just be something i might be open to then
as well, although my job only allows me to be in town a week a month, i'm going to be going to a well known music shop for teaching in my city and get in as often as i can

Great, you've got it all covered. Enjoy!!!! Kudos to those lessons too. I have an MIM Strat as well as an MIM Tele and both those quitars are top notch. Make sure you play and check out various MIM Strats before you buy. I had to take two back before I found one that was pretty near perfect.

I say for a beginner you should go for the mim Strat. They are well made, comfortable to play and wont break the bank. The American Strat will have better electronics, but the difference in tone may not be that noticable to you. For me the American neck with the hand rolled edges is much better than the mim. Some others dont see that much difference.
If you are sure you will stick with it, or plan to keep it forever, pick the American. It will keep its value far better. Good luck...

Yay Niki! BIG +1

Being only a disreputable non professional teacher (I taught both my sons and I teach some niehborhood kids for free) I have found that keeping your students interested by teaching not only what they need to learn, but also what they want to learn will keep them playing AND help keep them disciplined and motivated. There are acoustics, acoustic electrics and electrics in my group of kids.

Can you imagine a 14 year old metal head keeping at it very long if all he has to practice is Joan Baez songs on an acoustic. I'll bet that he (or she) would be out of that "reputable teachers" cubicle so fast it would make your head spin.

Guitar is also supposed to be fun

Hey I know, let's make fire by rubbing 2 sticks together too! That way we can fully grasp the fact that friction generates heat, which leads to combustion! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
