i have a couple of relics:
1. a DOD FX80 compressor pedal that was given to me a number of years ago
2. a Fostex MN-50 Mixer Compressor i bought back in the pre-digital, analog, 4-track days.

my questions are -
which one is better (if either)?

where should it go in the line-up? the current pecking order is: telecaster - overdrive - delay - amp

i'm new to the electric thing... been playing acoustic since noah parked the boat.
thanks,
frank

They both will do what most floor compressors will do, they reverse the guitar’s phase and cause a pop at the beginning of every note.

If you get chance, please check the Barber Electronics Tone Press. It is an U.S.A. hand made award winning boutique box without the boutique price.
It is the only Parallel Compression box on the market.

Please check out the Guitar Player's Mag. review...it won an Editor's Pick Award for a good reason....

GP summary:

Kudos: Exceptionally transparent sound. Dead quiet. Versatile. Ingenious Blend control. Doubles as a clean boost. Excellent value.

Concerns:None

I have gigged with many guitarists that use and love this unit. They typically use Fender tube combo and various guitars with excellent results. It really doesn't have a peer.

I would put it in between the overdrive and the delay. Only IMHO! This opinion is according to what effects you stated you have.

This question has been asked for years...a quick google gave me this :

"Put the compressor as the first pedal that the guitar plugs into on your pedalboard. The reason is that a compressor has a circuit in it that reads signal fluctuations and turns that into a dc voltage which controls the gain of the pedal. If the compressor is connected directly to the guitar, it can see the full range of peaks that is being generated by the pickups and is able to properly control its gain element. If you place the compressor after a fuzz or distortion pedal, then the dynamic fluctuations of the guitar signal are clipped off by the distortion circuit (or diodes) and the compressor does not have an input that is ideally suited for signal control."

thanks for the input, peoples.
when i had it set up i used the fostex in all 3 spots and thought it worked best when first in the line-up, but i didn't know if there were any strong opinions to the contrary.
i was getting that "pop" you talked about contrabassist, but managed to get it out with the fostex... it's not a "floor" pedal, it's a recording device with a little more control and flexability than the dod pedal.
anyway, i'm having a blast with all my new toys, and some of my old ones too.

A compressor after the overdrive is perfectly acceptable and makes a LOT of sense.

Why:
This allows you to still ride your volume control to adjust the amount of gain/overdrive you get but limits the volume so that it doesn't get much louder just dirtier.
This also allows you to play soft and clean, then dig in to get it dirty while keeping the levels reasonable.

A compressor always senses the full range of peaks that are generated by the imput singnal. The fact that the are already clipped by another pedal doesn't make it need to be first in line.

There are advantages to having it before the drive as well for more sustain and causing more of your signal to clip, but I use a bit of both in different situations.
