Hello IrishMike203,

I think my best Pawn shop find was
a late 50's ES-125TDC sunburst.
I played that axe for years.
I'd sure like to find another for $150.

Cheers.

I remember one pawn shop I used to frequent, between 1992-1995. I picked up REALLY decent stuff there. And no, they weren't hot items!

F'rinstance:

1962 Gibson Les Paul SG Junior in Cherry transparent finish: $600 (dummy me, I sold it for not much more than that. Crud!)

1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb amp WITH original Victoria Luggage Co. cover, original footswitch, and RCA tubes (it came from a Estate sale, they told me)--$850. I still have it.

Mid-70's Fender Deluxe Reverb amp with original footswitch and RCA tubes. Cost: $225 in 1992. I still have it.

1989 Marshall JTM 45 RI head--the serial number was in double digits and inscribed, not a sticker S/N, it was that early! $450. I still have it.

Last but not least, my first 'vintage' tube amp, bought in 1992--a late '64 Blackface Champ amp. Price? $100. I still have it.

Those were truly the days--because you USED to be able to find stuff like this on a regular basis! Not anymore. And no, I'm not telling anybody where this shop is, even though I haven't been there in years.

In 1968 I wnet into a pawn shop with a firend whose guitar had been stolen from a club (while we were too young to legally play, but did anyway). He bought a 1961 rosewood fretboard Strat for about $140.00. Talk about a guitar! I tried to buy it from him for over twenty years with no luck. I gave up, but he still has the sunburst Strat. I shudder to think of what it is now worth. It has been played a lot, but has not been abused. If he wanted to sell it I couldn't buy it without a second mortgage.

In 1985, I found a '77 Les Paul Special and a 50w Peavey amp both for $300. They were both in great condition and I still own them.

Prior to the "ebay era" a good friend and I used to find great deals in pawnshops - he was older than me and he would drag me around to flea markets, pawnshops, anyplace that he may find a deal - so I learned the game at an early age

Well, my favorite pawnshop story is eight or nine years ago - I was in New York and seen this silverface bassman 50 head - it was sitting there and the guy claimed it was "blown up" - so I asked him what he would take, he said $125, I then said, well if its blown, ill give ya $75 for it - he said, OK - So, I bring this head home, look it over, push the powertubes back in, and all of a sudden, MAGIC, it worked!! Sounded good! Well, I tear into this amp, clean the tolex with armor all, take the knobs off, soak them in a mixture, clean them up really well - I then find a used 2x12 Fender cab here in WV at a music shop, I paid $175 bucks for the cab - bring it home, do the same thing, give it a good once over, clean it up nice, great sounding, great looking amp!

Long story short, I kept it for a few months, told some folks about it - I turned my $250 investment with a few hours of work into $1100 cash!

One of the things I like about buying from local pawn shops is the fact that the shop owner is looking to sell the guitar for a good profit, not what the guitar may be really worth. I have found some really nice deals;
1990 Fender HM Strat MIA w/ EMG 81/SA pickups and preamp $200
2003 Fender Classic series 50's Stratocaster $200
1990 Charvel Strat w/ Jackson neck $125
Plus many other guitars that I have bought, repaired and refurbished, and sold.
If you can establish a relationship with your local stores, like I have, they will take care of you as a repeat customer. The 50's Strat was marked at $399, but the owner took it down to $200 for me, and it is in excellent condition. The lowest retail price I have found for that guitar is $699!! Not too bad, in my humble opinion. The days of 1962 Strats and 1969 Les Pauls are over, but there are still some deaals to be found, if you look.
