What's the difference?

I see some effects labeled as distortion while others are overdrive. Some are even called fuzz. I would like to understand not only the tonal differences but also the technical differences as well.

Overdrives are more defined...much like output breakup of a tube amp. You can easily discern the guitar with an overdrive. Also chords are easier to define.

Distortion seems to emulate front end breakup (pre-amp). It usually has more sustain but is less defined if the gain is to high.

Different degrees of the same goal...symmetrical clipping and/or asymmetric clipping.

Distortion is more for hard rock as you might find out for yourself. I prefer OD because it has a bit of grunge, but people can still hear what you are playing.
