Guitar----effects pedals----amp

You basically need two cables if you have one effects pedal. Just run your guitar like normal, but plug it into the input of a pedal. Then, plug a cable into the output of the pedal and go to either the amp or another pedal (from pedal to pedal they make small connectors for efficiency).

An effects pedal basically modifies or enhances your sound. There are several common types:

1) Distortion/overdrive/fuzz - these give your guitar a "dirty" harsher sound. Check out my recent post on this. I'd like to understand the differences better.

2) Reverb/Delay - these add echo and repeat effects.

3) Modulators - in this category there is chorus, phaser, flanger, tremolo.

One popular brand of pedal is Boss. On their web site you can see and hear demos of what their pedals do.

Some boutique pedals and very useful information without the boutique price that will sound great with any Fender guitar/amp combo. I work with many musicians who use Supers, Jr's, Deluxe's, etc...what a wonderful tone.

You can give a listen to many different Overdrive Pedals at the OD shootout here
.
http://www.oldtonezone.com/

I think he has around 18 pedals in his OD shootout lineup, they are played through a Blues Junior amp.

ok so basically i have my guitar, use my cable to plug the guitar into my pedal then from the pedal use another cable to go to my amp and if i want more than one pedal i go guitar to pedal and then i can use one of those small two inch or so cables to go from pedal to pedal and then a little longer cable to go from my last pedal to my amp

Yep, You just have to pick which type of pedal you want first !

My first was a Wah, followed by a tubescreamer followed by.....
Pedals like to eat 9V batteries a lot, or you want to buy a pedal power block once you start acquiring several pedals.

Well GAS can strike nasty here. :D

Yes most pedals take one 9V battery.
My Flanger and BOSS RT-20 takes 2 at a time and last maybe 5-6 hours on them.

That prompted me to buy the DC-Brick power supple that runs seven 9v and three 18v pedals. A bit expensive but I don't have to buy 9v batteries by the carton anymore.

Heh yep, it plugs into the wall.

This is the one I got
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DCBrick

They are expensive so unless you have a lot of effects and use them a fair bit it may not be cost effective to get one .

No need to be expensive - this is what I got:

http://www.sweetwater.com/c961--Visual_Sound--Power_Supplies

I picked the power supply (not shown) plus the multi plug 5, together was under $30.
