Does anyone know if someone puts out recordings of songs where they leave out the guitar, so you can play over for practice. Kind of like karaoke music that leaves out vocals. I copyright laws come into play, but if they can do it for Guitar Hero, you figure you can get it for regular play. Some older albums that havent been remastered you can move the sound to one speaker, and it will cut it out. Jeff Beck's album Truth comes to mind, all his guitar comes out of the left speaker, and the rest of the audio comes out the right, on the older versions at least.

You could try something like http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/ although many are just fan-made backing tracks which sound similar to the song, many times without vocals. Thats the best I can think of.

If you are looking for professional tracks. Steve Vai has put some albums out on cd or download called ' Naked Tracks ' They are a wide selection of his songs with vocal and backing on there, but his lead guitar left off.
All you have to do is play like Steve Vai.

Lick Library ( http://www.licklibrary.com/ ) does masses of DVDs of backing tracks to famous songs for you to jam along to - and the list is getting ever bigger.

There's also more and more guitar "trainer" devices, such as the various models of Tascam units ( http://www.tascam.com/products/mp-gt1.html ) that employ various technologies to edit out the lead guitar from an ordinary CD or mp3 so's you can play along. They usually will enable you to change the speed and/or the pitch too, to zero in on tricky passages.

In my very limited experience that technology is not perfect - but it is very popular!

Cheers - C

Wow, this is great. So I have a bunch of sources for it, awesome. That's why this is the best forum for guitars. I swear, every time I go onto another one, like ultimate-guitar for instance, it seams like it's just filled with a bunch of 14 year olds who have no idea what they're talking about, bad mouthing each other. Every question I ask here is answered quickly, and intelligently. Thanks again guys (gals).
PS, I don't have anything against 14 year olds per-say, but I'm sure you know what i'm talking about.

Just remember." Karaoke" is Japanese for, "death by music".

(I think I heard that here somewhere.) It's not mine, but it rings true!

I hope this link works . . .

http://line6.com/club/

There are backing tracks for a number of different genres about halfway down the page. Further down there are drum loops for those who have DAWs that accomodate loops.
