With the end of the year approaching, I was wondering what everyone's favorite new music of 2008 was / is. Here's mine:

Eric Hutchinson - Sounds Like This
Sun Kil Moon - April
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead
John Mayer - Where the Light Is

A couple of good ones for 2008...

Buddy Guy - Skin Deep
Steve Winwood - Nine Lives

Everything else I bought this year was old stuff.

Jeff Beck's new live album which was recorded at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.

"This sterling €™07 live gig at the famed British jazz club Ronnie Scott€™s in London features the legendary guitarist in a 16-song career-spanning set that incorporates Rock, Jazz, Ballads, Beatles, Blues, Boogie and Bolero. Beck raved it up so much with bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and keyboardist Jason Rebello that the usually sedate London Times gushed, perhaps the greatest living guitar virtuoso combining astonishing technique with a blissful nuance he exercised an almost supernatural control of his fretboard.€ Jazzwise called it €œan absolutely jaw-dropping display of the most exciting, imaginative and inspirational jazz-rock guitar witnessed in years.€ And London Lite added, the kind of visceral, fluid music-making that other guitarists can only dream of.€

Recorded over a series of gigs with standing-room-only crowds, the electricity was bouncing off the walls as Beck was clearly inspired himself and egged on by the perfect complement of band mates. A DVD of the event, the first such live concert DVD as authorized by Jeff Beck, will be available in 2009."

Track Listing
1) Beck’€™s Bolero
2) Eternity’€™s Breath
3) Stratus
4) ‘€˜Cause We’€™ve Ended As Lovers
5) Behind The Veil
6) You Never Know
7) Nadia
8) Blast From The East
9) Led Boots
10) Angels (Footsteps)
11) Scatterbrain
12) Goodbye Pork Pie Hat/Bush With The Blues
13) Space
14) Big Block
15) A Day In The Life
16) Where Were You

The only one I've really got that was released this year was Death Magnetic and I'm pleased with it. I also purchased Justice's "Cross", although I'm not sure of the release date of that. Excellent electronic based album though.

I'm not sure if it was released in '08 or not. It wa the first time I heard it! Mark Knopfler & Emmylou Harris - All the Road Running. A little western twang thrown in with a whole lot more. Nice...

BB King - One Kind Favor.

Knockout: I challenge you to give it a listen and not need to plug in and play along. And if you can meet that challenge - well then there's something wrong with you.

Brilliant album - he's in his 80s, for flip's sake!

Cheers - C

Wonderful thread! Lots of things to look for and give a listen to! Thanks.

My list, in no particular order except for the first three:
1. Joe Bonamassa, Live From Nowhere in Particular - What a masterpiece of a live CD...
2. Tab Benoit, Night Train to Nashville - The Blues Music Association gave Tab their 2006 Contemporary Male Blues Artist award. He came to B.B. King's in Nashville to accept the award and this is the concert that resulted...Backed by Louisiana's Leroux (remember New Orleans Ladies?) and joined by luminaries like Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Wet Willie's Jimmy Hall, this is some awesome Tele work. There is a matching DVD that I watch at least once a week.
3. Jeff Healey, Mess of Blues. His final release (sob). Self-admitted bar band covers, but what a bar band!
4. Sonny Landreth, From the Reach. The guest artist list is amazing.
5. Walter Trout, The Outsider. It's raw, it's fast, it's Walter...
6. Joe Satriani, Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock.
7. Tift Merritt, Another Country. Beautiful vocals, grown-up lyrics, and Charlie Sexton on guitar. Works for me...
8. Carolina Liar, Coming to Terms.
9. Steve Reynolds, The Carnival Papers. If you like singer/songwriters, give this guy a listen...
10. Mason Jennings, In the Ever. Not the greatest voice in the world, especially when he is pushing it to be Dylanesque. But when he stays within his limits - great simple, punchy tunes that tell great stories. And wonderful live shows!
11. Missy Higgins, On a Clear Night. I fell in love with this young Aussie's music a couple of years agoon her first CD, The Sound of White, which swept Australia's version of the Grammys. She is touring the US in support of her sophomore effort. Very talented young lady.

I nearly, nearly put that. But I just felt I've seen him do the opener, Bridge to Better Days, significantly better on at least two occasions that I've seen him live. Given that these tracks are selected from numerous different shows I was kinda surprised about the take they decided to go with on that number.

Joe's been my main man for about three years now, though. Unbeatable. You and Me would be high in my all time fave albums list!

Cheers - C
