I Write and Cover.

For writing, get a small digital camera that takes video, so when the right riff, chord run or lyric comes up, you can hear it and see it later. I've doubled my song out put since I got a camera (from 2 every six months to 4, but what the hell, double is double.).

yep, a lot, and for years. mostly instrumental music though. sometimes i'll have lyrics or a melody line that i'll past the singer. some is just acoustic guitar solo music. most is electric guitar based instrumental stuff. i'll record it in a number of ways.

You have no cassette recorded, or no basic $10 mic for your computer? nothing at all to record on?

you can even save up and get a $100 cassette multi-track recorded nowawadays, or a digitial that's not much more.

I have a cassette player but it doesn't have multi track ability. I may go with your suggestion about getting a multi-track recorder.

Both. I like writing originals and playing covers.

I write more when I'm in bands, but I'm not inna band now so output slows way down.

now it's mostly me, the drum machine and the tape recorder.
I write down a lot of stuff too so I don't forget it later.
It's good to build a library/journal full of riffs, chord progressions and lyrics so if I ever need ideas I can dig around in there for nuggets or starting points.

I've been writing for the last 5 years, mostly instrumentals since I don't sing. A couple of months ago I completed a song where the lyrics came first. That never happened to me before, the melody usually comes first. Also, I have a nasty habit of never finishing most of what I start. There must be 12-15 unfinished tunes on the hard drive.

To record, I'm using a Lexicon Lambda interface with Sony ACID Pro 6 (though I may upgrade to v7 soon), Sony Sound Forge 9 with iZotope mastering plug-ins to edit and master, Beta Monkey Music drum loops (best in the biz IMHO), a soft synth, and assorted other loops. Outboard gear includes a Line 6 PODxt, Casio keyboard, and my arsenal of guitars and amps. No mics, I record direct because I live in a condo. Gotta keep the noise down. And now the snowbirds are coming back!

I used to use a TASCAM Pocketstudio 5, but the PC is much easier.

I compose and cover songs as well. I have not played in a band in years (one could say almost 2 decades). When I composed my newer stuff I was playing on my own and I am not sure that they would sound good with a band. I have no way to record at this time. When I go mess in a guitar store I tend to play my stuff and people ask me what song I'm I playing. I just tell them that they would not recongnize the band.

I've been doing that since the 70's. I have a whole back log of songs. The hard part is recording them by yourself. Of course, I used to do it the hard way using 2 tape decks for overdubing. In the 80's, I finally got a little Tascam 4 track. I still have that, but don't use it now.

I retired for a while, got married, raised kids. Now, they're older so now I'm considering coming out of retirement and playing out. But, I decided to get my recording project out of the way. I use Sonar Home Studio right now. I also have Mixcraft, but I like Sonar better. For the drums, I use Beatcraft. Once I get my drum track down, I export it to a wave file and import it into Sonar.

Opps!... I got carried away for a moment...

There comes a time in every musicians life when the music he or she makes is more important to them than anyone else's. :D

Yeah... but it's not very good really. The best song I've made I made this morning, actually. Don't have a name for it.

You wrote it on Thanksgiving Morning, so how about,

Thanks Morning
It's Morning, Thanks
Thank The Morning
Give The Morning

or the old Blues Standby, Thanksgiving Morning Blues

I write my own--but mostly I have a collection of riffs & a collection of lyrics that sometimes find partners.

I've written three full songs, and my fourth is on the way as we speak. Two of the three completed have been for girls haha

create and cover. i start with writing on paper.

i fully agree with chucksolo69. i use the boss micro br for exercising or when i was to lazy to start my computer. also i load mp3's and don't need any extra player. very good tool on holidays, fit in every bag.

on the compi i use steinberg cubase se3, native instruments guitar rig and battery.

cheers :D

Absolutely true! Once you get the song written, the work really begins. When I first started recording my own demos, I found I had to do the arranging, play all the guitar and bass parts, program the drum loops, learn and play all of the keyboard parts (organ, electric piano, synths) since I don't really play keys, record any overdubs, be my own recording engineer, mix it and master it. Some of these software packages have steep learning curves, too. How many of these things can one person be good at?

Oh yeah, if it's a song with lyrics, I'll have to find somebody to sing it. Even with all of the new technology available to us, there is nothing that can make my voice sound good. :(

I've got a few notebooks full of lyrics, one or two of the songs are pretty much finished. I'm now putting them to music, and I hope to record them here at some time in the near future.
