I have made several of my own compositions, but I have no way of recording them really. I think I have about 10 songs that are more or less finished, but I can't really say they're done until I have a band that can help me complete all the other instrumental parts.

So do any of you write you're own stuff, or do you just like playing other people's songs?

I write and play original songs as well as cover other peoples stuff.
I'm pretty sure that most of us here either write/play at least some of our own stuff or have that as a goal in future.

I think we all do on occasion. I have just completed one and have had it copyrighted. I bought a portable 4 track micro studio to record on. It is a Boss Micro BR and it is an amazing device. It is barely bigger than an iPod Touch but contains an incredible amount of drum tracks (about 300) and guitar effects. The finished song can be exported as an MP3 and this is what I uploaded to the Library of Congress for my copyright. The cost, about $230.00 at GC. It has a high learning curve, but the power of the thing is amazing. I keep it in my gig bag just in case I want to record our gigs and practice sessions via the external mike the unit has on it. As a comparison, back in 1985 I bought a 4 track cassette recorder made by Yamaha that was about twice as big as a laptop and that thing cost me around 1500 bucks. It only had echo and reverb effects built in. You had to put a special metallic tape on the back of each cassette to allow recording of all 4 tracks simultaneously. Kludgy, but effective. The Boss Micro BR blows that thing completely to hell. I was able to record my song on the Micro BR in a couple of hours, all by my lonesome!!!

write my own stuff. Inbetween compositions i'm usually jamming other peoples stuff until i get in the zone for one of my own. I feel a lot of frustrations during composition, jamming on covers inbetween keeps things fun. Whilst i'm inbetween bands i just record em onto a tape player so they dont get lost in the mists of time. When im with a band i select what will work and offer it to them.

I've written a lot of stuff. The trick is staying motivated and recording it.

There's also lots of relatively inexpensive software you can use to record - even with multi-track capability so you can be the entire band. I like to use Logic Express on my mac, heck even Garage Band can handle that.

Yes, but only the melodies ... I'm probably one of the world's 10 worst lyricists. I've recorded a little of what I've written but age old story: 100% instrumental with no lyrics and no vocals doesn't even all that much interest friends. It's mostly mellow jazz with a bit of swing tossed in -- definitely nothing rousing like Satriani.

No...but I have recorded many bass tracks for other artists.

I really respect the spark that the songwriter creates, because without it, I am unemployed. My job is hopefully drive the song the direction they envisioned.

I write some original songs and record those and some covers. It sounds like you're asking what to use.

There are two very simple backing track software programs called Band-In-A=Box and Jammer Pro that you can easily add other instruments by typing in the chords and instruments you want, then use a program like "Noteworthy Composer" to transcribe the notes to plug in if you don't read music.

You could try using loops for drums and bass (even other instruments) with different software programs (Sony Music Studio, GarageBand, etc) or search the web for free loops.

Mixcraft is another good program for loops where you can combine several instruments then convert from WAV to MP3 and add your own parts.

I like the BR series recorders too. Programmable drums and bass sims.

Lastly, if you had a G-DEC 30, you could import MIDI songs through a keyboard (if you play) or stream from a computer and either save in G-DEC 30 or to computer.

Good luck!

I used to write my own songs as studies. Once I learned some new guitar technique I would put it into a song and practice it up. These were never intended to be heard by anyone but me.

Have written more public songs and performed them. Trouble is my voice is not that good. People don't seem to mind.

For recording, you don't have to spend a motza, audacity is a very powerful recording program and its FREE. Just google and download. All you need then is a method of getting your stuff onto a pc. You can multitrack, add effects and even pitch correct (badly)!

Borrowed a peavey classic 50 to go with my... ahem... ibanez s-series. (don't worry, it was a replacement for a stolen fender) for the lead work and it sounded awesome!

yep, a lot, and for years. mostly instrumental music though. sometimes i'll have lyrics or a melody line that i'll past the singer. some is just acoustic guitar solo music. most is electric guitar based instrumental stuff. i'll record it in a number of ways.

You have no cassette recorded, or no basic $10 mic for your computer? nothing at all to record on?

you can even save up and get a $100 cassette multi-track recorded nowawadays, or a digitial that's not much more.

I think I mentioned this before, but I have been working on the same song for years. It keeps changing, and I I seem unable to compose lyrics that do not sound like limmericks. I envy you guys that are poets in addition to being muscicians.
