As a guitar player, I don't know how useful it is to be able to sight read sheet music. Very little of what you'd play would be in basic notation, you'll either need chord names, or tab for understanding solos. I don't think I've ever seen anybody sight read tab, I've mostly used it to sit down and take my time to learn or understand how something was played.

How well do you understand music theory? That might be a good place to go.

It really depends on what (or gig) you are trying to do. Even though you might not need to use the ability to sight read notation to often, it is a great way to learn and internalize music very quickly. Without the ability to read rhythm, you will have to depend on an actual recording of the music you want to learn. Granted it is a good for the ear to learn music of recording, but isn't always that practical.

I am in absolute agreement about learning music theory. Without theory you will not fully understand what you are reading and the ability to improvise will be very limited.

Either way, I again agree, you never to old to learn. With this art, you are (hopefully) always in a constant state of development.

i never took any official music theory courses, but i do understand how songs are put together and how to get a certain feeling to come out... like you know how a straight up C chord can be darkened up with an A minor scale, toss a flat 7th into the mix for a little grit, suspended 2nd for that light and airy thing... grammer school stuff for most of the people here, but enough to impress a bunch of drunks at a party.
as far as expanding the art, that's where i'm feeling stuck. i play the same ol' stuff the same ol' way, and if i learn something new, i play it the same ol' way.
if through the lessons i could just manage to pull off a few fills, i'd be a happy guy.
the good thing was my father-in-law gave me his telecaster and fender auto amp, which was the inspiration to try to expand. it's the first "real" electric i've ever owned... but i've been playing it like an acoustic... and that doesn't work.

if you want to expand your "riff" knowledge, there's some really good stuff out on youtube.

I particularly like http://www.youtube.com/user/rockongoodpeople and http://www.youtube.com/user/gr8bluesgtr.

If you have been playing so long, you will be surprised at how quickly it will all come together. I am 55 and started cold a little over three years ago. It's been a wonderful journey and I still have a hard time with timing, but only when I play with my teacher. With each passing week, I am playing better and better. I will say it may take me a little longer to get a riff than iwould a 13 year old would, but I get there and time is just time. I would love to have hour lessons, just can't afford them.
