well, after playing guitar for 32 years, i finally decided to take lessons. i sit in for an hour with my 13 year-old son and his teacher.
i decided to jump in a couple of weeks ago because i've never learned to sight-read music or tab, and the teacher knows both.
i'm still having a hard time making the transition to doing what's on the paper rather than what's in my ears and head.

what i know:
staff, basic notation, time signatures... you know, the stuff you learn in high school music... but i can't look at the sheet music and play it.
what i've been playing for 32 years is mostly acoustic, rhythm guitar, chords up and down the neck, and the riffs that are contained within the chord structure.

any suggestions on where to start?

Do you have to pay extra for this? I am assuming that you pay your son's lesson!

yes, sort of - the instructor offered me to sit in on 1/2 hour lesson at no charge. i told him i didn't think that would be fair to him, and that a half hour wasn't long enough, then he suggested to go for an hour with both of us... kind of a "family plan".
he had an opening he wasn't getting paid for, he made the offer, i didn't argue.

As a guitar player, I don't know how useful it is to be able to sight read sheet music. Very little of what you'd play would be in basic notation, you'll either need chord names, or tab for understanding solos. I don't think I've ever seen anybody sight read tab, I've mostly used it to sit down and take my time to learn or understand how something was played.

How well do you understand music theory? That might be a good place to go.

music theory might be one of those things that i may or may not understand. i. e., if somebody were to explain exactly what it is, i just might say, "oh, that... yeah, i've been doing that for years."
i guess the problem i'm having is if someone were to play a basic 3-chord pattern and asked me to fill in with a pentatonic, my fills would sound more like "mary had a little lamb" than "montana".

I guess I'm talking generally about the relationship between chords (like I IV V), scales, how minor chords fit in, variations like 7th, 9th, sus.

After a 30 year lay off I started playing again last year. At 60, I`m considering taking some lessons again. So I wouldn`t let your age stop you if your trying to improve your skills.

i've got a good handle on that sort of thing. i can usually figure out the chords of songs i like and want to play... but like i said, it's just the chords and a few riffs i can manage without leaving the proverbial "box"... but nothing that would resemble a lead solo by any stretch.
i guess it's a matter of - how do i beging to develop a technique?

age has nothing to do with it... more like being stuck in the rut of old habits. i've got so used to playing rhythm, my hands will be strumming and picking, my head says "how 'bout trying this?", and the hands say, yeah right... shut up snf go back to sleep.
i can play air guitar like nobody's business... put me in front of a camera, stick a guitar in my hand and ask me to synch the solo to inca roads and 9 out of 10 would have a hard time tryiing to figure out if i was actually playing it, but trying to do it for real is like trying to speak another language.

I think Music Unlimited in Kingston is near you...is that where you're taking lessons? They used to have some very good teachers there. As for age, it's only a number.
