Do heavier guitars sound better than light ones? I've heard some people say that but I'm not sure.

I find that weight definitely has an effect on tone and I do favor heavier strats. However I find that heavier strat bodies seem to come from the ones made from solid wood which i am pretty sure is only available on american models these days. If you play with heavy distortion I don't think the weight would be as important because I find that as distortion is added the guitar's true voice becomes less prominent.

The type wood & the weight do affect the sound.

Usually the heavier woods are brighter than say a resonant light body.

Alder typically isn't that heavy to start with for a hardwood vs. most ash bodies (the exception of swamp ash).

But the extreme: solid maple would be very bright and heavy. But that wouldn't be a common body wood for Fender.

I can't say that I have noticed any "better" sound.

And I own some light and some heavy Strats.

I just bought my daughter a Lace Hunter guitar. (was better sounding than the Squires I was looking at) Her guitar is extremely light. The sustain is not as good as either of my guitars and the tone is not as full. My Fender HWY 1 Strat is my heaviest guitar and by far is the best sounding guitar I have ever owned. I would have to say the weight and wood type do play a little role on tone.

I think the body wood has some effect on the sound but the quality of the neck and its wood I think has more effect to sound. Also how well it is fitted to the body
