Sounds like you've had a real nightmare though!

Electric cheaper than gas WOW thats the opposite then on this side of the pond. In Maryland gas is the most efficient heat to have because electric cost has gone thru the roof. We just spent a small fortune on a High Efficiancy furnace and central air along with a a climate system to maintain the proper humidity in the house. My house is not to big its 2240 sq.ft. and it appears so far we are seeing about 100 to 120 a month in savings over our old 18 year old system so it should pay for itself in about 6 years in savings. Our Central air is 19 seer and the gas heat is a two stage furnace and a carrier climate control. Wish I would have changed it sooner.

Yeah, gas used to be cheap in the UK too, when we had plentiful reserves in our own part of the North Sea. However, those are running down and an encreasing part of our supply has to be bought on the open market at world prices.

And these days so much of that is now coming from Russia. There's pipelines thousands of miles long that ultimately end up at our cookers and central heating systems - and somewhere near the other end Vladimir Putin's hand hovers above the tap! He switched off Ukraine's gas a couple of years ago when they didn't like the price he was charging, and since then the rest of Europe has been sweating blood over energy security.

The rush for renewables we are all engaged in is not only about climate change!

Cheers - C

My Wife and I stayed in a place in Ireland last year while we were looking for property and that home had a wood pellet boiler and they seemed to be common in the neighborhood.

I spend half my time in the country and in that location we have a Norwegian woodburning stove. We also have a couple of hundred mature trees, so are completely self-sufficient for fuel. Carbon neutral, too: what goes up the chimney gets captured by trees and turned into more timber!

The last five years we have cut down five trees and planted something over 40. Ecology in action!

Eat your heart out, Vladimir Putin...

We have been to Ireland a few times trying to find a place to buy so thet we could pay it off by the time we can retire there but they do not make it easy for an American when it comes to living there. There is still some distant relatives of mine there on Mothers side.
