I hear the Telecaster is a big guitar for country music guitarists. I remember seeing a picture in the paper of Keith Urban and a friend of his, his friend was playing a Tele. Keith was playing a double cut Gibson Melody Maker like mine (except with a cherry finish).

Yeah, the Telecaster seems to be the choice of a lot of country players.

I had a Telecaster, it has a tone you can`t get from a Strat. From deep and mellow to that country twang. Play one in your local music store and see for yourself.

I've seen quite a few "lead" guitarists in country bands using Strats, both now and in the past. Usually in that case, the lead is in the backing band, not one of the featured artists. But I've seen Kix Brooks of Brooks and Dunn using an LP and other Gibsons while Ronnie Dunn usually plays a Tele. Ditto for other name stars who play electric -- I'd have to agree with other posters that those more known as singers than guitarists also tend toward Teles.

Brad Paisley is quickly gaining a reputation as one of Country's best pickers. He plays Teles.

I can get the "new and old country" sound from both my tele and strat. I just think Fenders are the best guitars - bar none. And let's not forget Fender amps, you'll need a good tube amp to get that country sound as well. Fender - the only way to go.

Today's country music, at least what I've seen and heard lately, is not your daddy's country music.

Lady Antebellum, The Tractors, Brooks & Dunn etc...

I've seen a lot of Gretsch lately, along with Teles, Strats even Jags.

Tele's of course. I've seen guy use strats as well. A good number of modern country players I see playing Les Pauls as well. There's a fine line between modern country and modern pop/rock nowadays. Other than the twang in the singer's voice, there's isn't much of a difference in a lot of the music.

Lots of Country guys play various incarnations of the Telecaster. However, with signal processing, pickup changes, and additions (see the Nashville Tele) I think it's more about "the look" than the sound. But the Tele in it's original form has a GREAT Country twang.

In point of fact, most of what is considered "Country" today used to be called "Southern Rock". Just an observation. 8)
