I'm gonna start on the next song I want to try, which is "Let There Be Rock" by old AC/DC (can't say I really care for the AC/DC after Bon). But I got to thinking, for the 3 solos that I'm going to slowly be going through, does anybody have any performance notes tips for those solos? Are they pentatonic? Or just plain nutty?

Most of Angus' soloing is myxolidian based (the blues scale to us common folks). At least that's the way I play 'em.

One note would be that a lot of his solo tone is from the way he plays. He does NOT have a light touch. If you sissy-pick the notes, you won't get that balls-out, in your face, singing tone - on any amp. Some of the notes he plays are picked very aggressively, and given a good solid vibrato, etc.

He doesn't use much distortion really (all power tube gain, for the most part). Less than most people think. But the way he plays it give him a lot of that tone.

When you pick like that, you don't have to move your hand more. Just keep the pick a little tighter so it doesn't flex too much. A thicker pick might help too.

Also, be very deliberate when you pick them, make every note clear and clean. If you need to tense up more muscles to get a more solid tone like this, they should be in the grip of your thumb and finger. You don't need to make your whole forearm tense (at all), or lock your wrist (unless you want to develop carpal tunnel).

For the content - mostly pentatonic, with some variations here and there. He'll switch from major to minor pentatonic here and there, like a lot of blues players. Pretty basic stuff really. Angus once laughed at the fact that people loved his playing. He said he made a living of playing the same solo to every single song.
