MiM Strats are great, that's for sure! Also, try looking into some different amps when you can, maybe like the Fender FM 15? :D

If you are the same person from the other thread I read, I think you are into Southern Rock and Country.

1: If you want that twangy sound, Telecaster definetly. Stratocaster is used more for blues/rock; however, you can play county and southern rock with it as well. They are very versatile guitars. You are looking at $400-$1000 (For Fender products). A general rule is the fancier the guitar, the more expensive it will be. I would start with a made in Mexio (MIM) which is the Standard series for both lines.

2: I would buy a good amp next. I have no advise for that. The music I play is Hard Rock, Metal, and Blues. I own a Crate amp and play through foot pedals. My set up is good for the music I play. My only suggestion for that is save another 2 to 4 hundred dollars for a good practice amp. You want more than a 15 watt amp if you are eventually plan on being in a band or practicing with another person. When the time comes to buy the amp, tell the sales person what you want to play, they can help you find the right amp. Especially in the Tennesee area.

I know this is a very expernsive hobby to get into. I have spent over $10,000 over the last 20 years. (not including strings and basic repairs to equipment)

I hve no arguments with the advice for guitar choice but can I just throw in to the pot an idea for an amp.

Blackstar have just introduced a small(ish) practice amp.
Absolute quality, incredible tone..
In the UK they will about £220 so I'm guessing about $350 in the US.

This is probably going to be one of the finest well priced amp around.

Get a MIM Standard Telecaster or Stratocaster depending on your musical tastes. Either way, you can't go wrong because they're both great guitars for the buck.

I concur...

Unless you want a U.S. made guitar, then the list price jumps almost $400.00 for the FenderHighway One series guitar.

Otherwise I agree with jeffo46, you can't beat the MIM Standard.

If you have the money to spend, then yeah - get a better guitar (MIM) and an amp. A good amp will do more for your guitar SOUND than getting a new guitar. A better guitar will make you play better since it will feel better and will be easier to play. Just a note.

Also, I might even suggest playing the hell out of what you have now, until you get something new. If you can make what you now have, sound good, you'll be that much better when you get better gear and will appreciate it more.

Only know a few chords? Fine, play them back and forth, practice switching between them, until you can play them as well as you can. Only know two notes on the guitar? Play them all over the neck, back and forth, up and down, picked, then with your fingers, once, twice, in every combination you can imagine - until you can't possibly play those two notes any better. Keep this philosophy when you get better as well.

A lot of the tone and the way you sound is also going to be in your hands as well. A good guitar might get that out better if it's easier to play, and a good amp will make that tone much nicer sounding, but ultimately it's in your hands - literally.

First thing to do... get lessons or a self-teaching book, and/or both. Go through the lessons (obviously). Learn how to read both tab AND sheet music (if you don't know already). Knowing how to read sheet music will help you become a very versitile musician. If the strings on the guitar haven't been changed in a while, you should do so. Get a tuner if you don't already have one.

I agree that the Fender Mexican stratocaster, and probably telecaster, are excellent. If you like a rock and roll sound, consider the "HSS" model stratocaster, which has a humbucker that delivers more of a classic rock sound. Alternatively, try some of the Epiphone Les Pauls that are in the $600 range, not the cheapest Epiphones, though.

For an amplifier, you need one that's good, and I am very happy with the Roland Cube 30x. The Cube 15x costs less, but I cannot vouch for it.

Whatever you do, don't get a cheap equipment. You'll hate it and you'll either quit or end up paying again for something better.

In this opinion there are not many guitars equal to the MIM Tele or Strat in either price, value or capability, until you go at least a few hundred bucks more.

When you buy it, take the new axe to a hotshot pro for setup, and it will play like a $1000+ instrument.
