I'm trying to think back 12 years ago when I decided I wanted to play bass why I went to GC and bought an American P Bass. I don't remember specifically saying to myself that I need a Fender. I love they way they look and it is balanced so nice.

The Men: Clarence Leo Fender and Les Paul

The Guitars: Telecaster, Stratocaster, Les Paul

After that it's all just "mucking about" and trying to increase sales by adding new models. Nothing can beat the original 3. With those guitars you can play anything you want to.

This is a little off topic, but I must point out a common misconception about the Les Paul guitar. Les Paul Did Not Design It. Ted McCarty designed it along with the ES 335, 337, SG, and Explorer using some of the inovations Les Paul discovered with his "Log".

Point is, without the LOG there would be no Les Paul model.

Bought my first in 1966. They have a distinct sound for a wide array of musical tastes. Timeless design, great value and plenty mojo!! I agree that to complete the stable ya gotta have a Gibby. 8) Mike

Very true, but don't you think the Man who introduced all of Gibsons Solid and Semi Hollow body designs deserves recognition for inventing the Instrument that became the "Other Rock Icon".

Ted McCarty came up with the Stop Tail Piece (not on the original design), Chambered Mahogony Body, Neck Setting, Scale Length, nut width, neck radius, Head Stock, Machine Head Placement, Two Piece arched maple top, and covered Gibson Humbuckers (P-90's on the first models), While Les Paul really only endorsed the design.

Paul reed smith honoured ted. Now paul knows a thing or two about knocking up a plank and you will never get any argument from me that gibson produce very fine instruments. You'll never catch me playing one though unless they go to 25'1/2" scale.

Anyway.
I always swore i'd never have a fender, they were too plain and boring without gizmo's and gadgets. At one particularly desperate time in my life, i had no guitar and a friend gave me a strat copy. The minute i played it i swore i would own a fender the next time money came my way. Aside from a flirtation with jackson/charvel and esp, their all i've ever bought.

I knew someone would answer this way. I resisted doing it.

I think the 3 electric guitars pro musicians should own are:

1. Fender Telecaster
2. Fender Stratocaster
3. Gibson Les Paul

I have a Les Paul, and I wouldn't mind a Strat--although in many ways I prefer my Mustang. Maybe one day I'll get a Strat.

But as for Teles--while I respect their historical role in electric guitar/overall guitar/music history, and I love what some guitarists do with them, they aren't the guitar for me. I find them uncomfortable to play due to the body shape. So I would only ever own one if it was given to me. And then I'd probably sell it & buy a Strat or trade it for one.

But no offense to Tele lovers--keep playing them and enjoying them. If that's the guitar taht speaks to you--go for it.

Fender is ... just ... well Fender. I can't even imagine owning anything else. It's the whole classic history, look, feel, and sound that gets me. No other brand compares.

I do like Peavey amps, but not any better than Fender.

This is a great post. I agree 100%.

My first real guitar was a Mustang -- bought with an amp for $100 (used). I might have gotten some unplayable electric for the same or a bit less and no way could I have afforded one of the higher end (Gibson, Guild, etc.) guitars of the time.

So thanks to Leo -- modular design plus a decent volume of sales made for a playable guitar at an affordable price.
