So here's what it is for me. I love Fender guitars, but the Fender "sound" has got almost nothing to do with it.

I like the way the guitars look.
I like the way the guitars balance.
I like the way the necks feel.
I like the fact that you can easily mod the heck out of them.

The sound of Fender pickups....I almost always change 'em out for DiMarzio's or Seymour Duncans (depending on the application).

Anyone else in the same boat? It's not that I think Fender pickups sound bad; their sound just isn't a factor in my choice of Fender guitars.

I'm just too lazy to reach all the way to the other side of the headstock to tune the G, B and high E. :P

On top of that, Fender guitars sound awesome and look cool. And the contours of the Strat and Jazzmaster fit my rotund belly very comfortably. Fenders pretty much kick azz all the way 'round!

I love the stock american pickups. I'd be fine with that sound for any gig or recording session I do.

But, on my main guitar I ended up changing the pickups. Why? I did it a while back and want to be able to play hi-gain stuff and was looking for a little more versatility with a splittable JB Jr on the bridge and lace sensors. I wanted that Fender sound, I just wanted to be able to use it for hi-gain too.

But that Fender sound is what I love the most, otherwise I wouldn't play their guitars. I'd just go get some Gibby clone or some Ibanez or something. I wasn't trying to change the Fender sound when I switched pickups, I just wanted to be able to get that sound in a wider range of applications.

Fender is ... just ... well Fender. I can't even imagine owning anything else. It's the whole classic history, look, feel, and sound that gets me. No other brand compares.

I do like Peavey amps, but not any better than Fender.

I don't have any problems with the stock pickups in my two Fender MIM Strats at all. The same thing with my Squire Tele Custom.

I like mine the way it is (maybe could use an Atomic Humbucker in it). I love everything about it. I always wanted a Fender Stratocaster, now I own one. I want a MIA Deluxe next. That may have to wait for a few more years for that one.

Because I had tried Mustangs before, and I liked them. I found one on sale for a really good price and I had just started a new job & had some extra cash--so I bought it. It's the closest to an impulse buy I've had--except there were two Mustangs in the store for a while--the only reason I hadn't bought one earlier was the rosewood fingerboard was on the ugly brown body & the nice sunburst had a maple fingerboard. When they lowered the price & offered to switch the necks--they had a sale.

I play Fender basses because I am inspired by their classic sound. The iconic look is a by-product of the form & function of the instrument that as a whole creates the sound formed by the musician who plays it.

The unique wood combinations, scale length, pick-up placement, bolt-on vs. set neck, single coil &/or humbucker (in various outputs), and hardware all have a profound effect on the over-all sound that is Fender. With a basic bolt-on neck guitar or bass...You can copy it, mod it, change it anyway you want, but your starting blueprint is based on a Fender. So I would guess you kind of dig Fender's or Fender siblings.

Try the same pick-up combination in other respected guitars that follow a different design (single coil pick-up in a 335)... & for better or worse, you will have a different outcome.

The tone starts with the hands of the musician that is manifested with the right tool.

Why Fender? Classic Rock, that's why. I think the 3 electric guitars pro musicians should own are:

1. Fender Telecaster
2. Fender Stratocaster
3. Gibson Les Paul

Emphasis goes on the two Fenders.

Those three guitars cover ALL the bases as far as musical needs go! Face it, most other brands of instruments, Carvin, PRS, Dean, Schecter, BC Rich, etc. are all variations of one or all of those three instruments.

Agreed. Everything else is some shade of those three, or some combo of them.

It's also interesting that many people think that the vintage originals of those guitars, and what they want to sound like. The originals. Way back when they were still just testing things back in the day.

After so many years of refinements and technology, that original sound it still so highly sought after and replicated. You can add better components, locking tuners, finishes, etc. But that basic layout, tone and pickup design 50+ years ago is still the standard by which everything else is based off of, and still copied.

Yes, funny how we musicians are always looking for that "classic" sound above all else and go to great lengths to try and find it. That's part of the fun of being a musician though. I wouldn't trade this music thing for the world!!
