seems I remember a top-of-the-line fender hollow body , called futura. Some double-cut-away. Am I crazy? Do I have the name wrong. Last I heard of it was "strings and things' in downtown fullerton. in 70 one or two.

I no Gibson made two guitars with the Futura name in the 1950's and another they used to call the can opener in the early 80's. Epiphone is now making a guitar called the Futura

The Can Opener...wasn't that the Gibson Moderne?

Futura was the original name of what became the Explorer. The shape was similar, but had some differences. The Moderne was patented at the same time as the Futura/Explorer & the Flying V--only the V & Explorer went into production for sale in 1958.

Gibson never produced a Moderne for sale until the late 80's or 90's--I could look that up, but I don't feel like it right now.

In the 70's Ibanez made a Moderne copy that they called the Futura. SO there is confusion from that.

The Canopener Gibson was the Corvus.
http://vintage-guitars.blogspot.com/2005/11/gibson-corvus-guitar.html

But they also used the Futura name for the Corvus at times.

SO it's not a straightforward answer.

Gibson made them for like 3 years doing the 80's The first Futura eventualy turned into the Exployer for Gibson. And now Epiphone is calling one of there Phophecy guitars Futura as part of ther designer guitars.

Isn't the 58 Moderne meant to be the mythical guitar. No one really knows anything about it for certain although its widely accepted that gibson built atleast one of em in 58. I remember one surfacing a few years ago that claimed to be a 58 but was pronounced a fake.
I dont know much for sure about the guitar, i would be glad if someone could clear up a few facts for me.

As I mentioned--the Moderne was patented in 58.

There are several stories about how many Modernes may have actually been made then as promotional items. None were for sale. There's no clear numbers that can be determined by official Gibson records from the time.

For more info there is some stuff in The Gibson Electric Guitar Book by Walter Carter.

There have been many fakes of Modernes.
If a real one from 58 was ever uncovered it would bring a huge amount in an auction.

(And the Epi Futura is based on the original shape for the Gibson Futura--which was altered & became the Explorer. You can find both on the EPI & Gibson sites.)
