I'm about to drop another $1250 for a new American Deluxe strat to replace my 3 month old one that was stolen from my apartment a few weeks ago. I don't own a home, and drive a company car, so I can't get insurance to cover theft, and seeing as though I had a break in recently I figure if I got renters insurance it would be a struggle to get paid if it happens again anytime in the next year or so. Does anyone have any experience in insurance specifically designed for musical instruments? Do you know any good companies and a ballpark figure on what it would cost to insure this? I figure between a new strat, amp, and acoustic, id want about $3000 in coverage.

Even if you've filed a claim, tenant insurance shouldn't be hard to get, or too expensive. Call around to several companies & explain what you're looking for. You'd probably be better off going with an insurance broker who represents several insurance companies.

But any time you have to file a claim, it kind of sucks--both because something happened & because you have to deal iwth an insurance company.

Yah I would just check into renters ins. and put a rider on it for your guitars and what other items of value you have. They will put them on as a seperate item. I had to take pictures and show receipts for my Guitars and all my Guns and had them added to my Home owners policy along with Art work we had to take and get appraised. It does not cost much more to do.

Renters Insurance is not likely to cover the instrument when you travel or particularly if you use it professionally (aka - gig).

I would check with the Musicians Union (local or online) to see what is recommended. There is specific insurance that caters to musical equipment.

Renters insurance will cover theft but:

- it may or may not cover theft off premises
- you may have to get a rider (extra coverage) for theft as many policies limit the amount of coverage for certain items as pertains to theft

Things like jewelry, firearms, computers, and musical equipment are usually limited in coverage for theft. The extra coverage shouldn't cost much. Just be sure you say you want it and make the agent explin exactly how it works.

My home owners' covers anything I own, whether stolen from my home or somewhere else. It is a good idea to pre-list expensive or unique items such a guitars and guns. (If you guys think GAS is bad, you should see it with high end firearms) It a very good idea to have pictures and receipts for any of the items, and do not store them in the case, or near the item. A bank deposit box is where I keep mine, with other important things. If the guitar is something extra valuable, or really rare, you want to get a written appraisal of the value and supply it to your insurance company before something happens. There will be a BIG difference between the "insurance value" and the amount the dealer will give you for it.

I have home owner's insurance and everything I have is covered. I write down all serial numbers, including the numbers on all my guns.
