I have recently been thinking that I would like to make a true Tele bass. My plan is to buy a Tele (most likely a Squire, I doubt my funds will stretch to a MIM or MIA) and simply replace the neck and pickups.

This is where the problem comes in, with pickups.

I was thinking that I could use Bar Magnet tele pickups instead of the stock ones, as string placement wouldn't matter. Would being guitar pickups make a difference?

If anyone knows more on this or has some insight, please share.

Edit: I'm thinking either This or this, based on finish.

Hi NWest51: do you mean that you are planning to fit a bass neck to a Tele body? Have you considered the difference in the heel and neck pocket sizes involved? For instance, see the diagrams towards the bottom right of these two pages:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bodies,_nec ... _Bass.html

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bodies,_nec ... uitar.html

And have you thought about bridge placement, bearing in mind the much longer scale length of the bass neck?

I suspect pickup issues will be the least of your problems...

Good luck - C

Vintage Modified Precision Bass® TB

It is a Fender Tele Bass with the Squier name.

Very cost effective.

I've seen the Telecaster basses before, but what I'm looking for is a telecaster body shape, which the tele bass doesn't have.

Besides, I'd like to do something custom.

Edit: I missed your post, Ceri.

... I completely forgot about the neck pocket and bridge placement. I might be better off with a custom body from Warmoth or something.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Hi, NWest51: I'm sure you could get Warmoth to put a bass neck pocket on a Tele body and omit the bridge pickup route and through body string holes - for a price.

But there'd still be a couple of problems. You'd find that to achieve the correct placement for the scale length the bridge would have to be very close indeed to the back of the body - in fact, I'd want to do some measuring first to make sure it would work at all.

Also, a proper Tele body is lighter and differently balanced than a bass body, particularly with reference to the front strap pin. You'd find this guitar would be extremely nose heavy - it would have a tendancy to drag down at the headstock end. Like a Thunderbird, but worse.

Be most interested to see if you can pull it off, though. Please post pix if you do - it will look very unique!

Cheers - C
