I recently won a bid on a MIM Strat and I used Pay Pal to make the transaction and thank God I did. The seller asked for a money order that I wouldn`t agree to send him. The biding ended on 11/9/08, which gives him 10 days to ship the guitar before I could put in a claim. He told me he shipped it out and when UPS sends him the tracking number he`ll send it to me. When you use Pay Pal they send you a notice as soon as the item is shipped and UPS gives you a tracking number upon paying for the shipment. I didn`t get the notice from Pay Pal or the tracking number. The 19th I`m filing a claim with Pay Pal for a full refund. I`m posting this as a warning if you use ebay. Only use Pay Pal for your transactions for your own protection. With today`s economy being what it is, there`s scammers on every street corner.

This tie's in with an early post of mine when I said I don't make bids on ebay as I just dont have the trust.
A mate of mine bought a guitar on ebay, was told it was an epiphone Les Paul style in excellent condition, rarely played etc.
He won the bid but when he got the guitar it was a pile of junk, he didnt get anywhere with his complaints.
And yes made the mistake of not using paypal

Sorry you got youself the bad end of a deal man

When I Ebay, I always use Paypal.
It's safer and so much more convenient than money orders.

Make sure to take the time to read a sellers feedback too. Lots of positives from other buyers is hard to fake. If all or most of the feedback is from only a couple of users. watch out.

I've been using Ebay both as a buyer and a seller for about 8 years and it's been a pretty positive experience.

Finally, the old adage still applies; if the deal sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Yes I've been buying on e-bay for a couple of years now and I always use paypal. I haven't had a bad experience yet and hopefully that will continue to be the way.

Hello JPD,

I've been using ebay for years and
for the first time used paypal last week.
Much easier than I thought the process would be.
I usually send money orders and have never
been burnt, but I suppose I'm getting leery
of some of these sellers with poor descriptions
and worthless photos.

Best of luck with all your transactions.

Cheers.

I only use ebay to look for adverts. If i cant call a shop, speak to a person and then go to it and pay cash i dont buy.

JPD, all the best with your claim against the looser. People like him are the main reason i wont shop online.

I know people have had bad experiences with eBay, but I've bought guitars, cases, CDs, all kinds of stuff and I've never been burned. Of course, I've used PayPal for all of the transactions.

I think that since mid-October, PayPal is the only payment eBay is allowing for most items--that's according to announcements that eBay made. But I don't know how that is working out in practical terms. Has anybody been selling on eBay in the last month?

I no longer even look at ebay.

The last time I looked, there were no deals any better that you would find anywhere else. So why buy there?

As for ..
Quote:
, and don't even get me started on Craig's List, that's the worst. Nothing but Nigerian scammers on there.

I now post anything I have for sale on Craig's List.
And I'm NOT A Nigerian, And I'm Not a scammer!!
I repeat
And I'm NOT A Nigerian, And I'm Not a scammer!!
And your statement that implies all Craig's List users are scammers, is offensive to me. I don't fall into anybodies convenient little pigeon hole, and WILL NOT allow anyone to put me in one, except myself. I am American, and still proud of that. (at least until the next administration goes into office)

I limit my sales to local pickup only - as is advised by warnings on Craig's List

Craig's List sites have warnings about scammers, and advise using local sales to prevent being scammed. So, if you bother to READ their warnings - and if you bother to FOLLOW their warnings, it's a good site to buy and sell at. Just do as they advise and make ALL your buying and selling with someone you can look in the eye. And don't take checks, money orders or anything but good old cash for your things you sell. And INSPECT every item you are buying before you give your good old cash for it. (unless, of course, the person is a personal acquaintance, and you trust them) (and know where they live ;) )

It's not Craig's List that is bad. The bad comes from not following, or ignoring, warnings and good advise.

If you get taken in some transaction - is it Craig's List fault - especially after they have posted warnings?

Craig's List is a good alternative for buying and selling - if you use some common sense - and follow good advise.

ebay also went up on their charges for posting ads. (a friend closed his ebay store because of it) Craig's List is still free.
If you want to use ebay - fine. Use it. If you don't like Craig's List - fine. Then don't use it.

Yes .. with ebay, paypal can be used. I still like the cash system better. I see too many possible pitfalls with paypal that cash doesn't have.

But to call EVERYONE that uses a site you don't like some derogatory term, is, at the least, very insulting.

I've bought things on EBay for a few years now, and I won't buy any way other than PayPal. The only problem I ever had with them had nothing to do with an actual transaction.

I found 11 small charges for purchases of jewerly -- a couple for as low as $0.58 -- coming from PayPal from some seller in Italy. I called the bank, who verified that the requests came in a wire file with all the proper info for PayPal. They told me that I'd have to call them and that made sense.

When I called them, they said their system showed no purchases from me. Okay, but my bank said that they needed to say that in writing. I went through several layers of support and security but they refused to send a letter. One person said he could "call" but was not authorized to send a writing. Even when I suggested that they might be more than a bit concerned that some offshore criminals seemed to be able to precisely duplicate their Fed wire header info ... no luck.

Craigslist -- I've sold quite a few musical items on it and if you follow the rules, no problems. Sure, if I was selling something big I'd get a mail from someone who'd send a truck right over after their offshore check cleared. Yeah, right ... it's cash only and that's that. That in fact is the whole point to Craigslist ... no chasing checks, etc.

Ebay is full of Crooks. The only time I bought anything off Ebay was from a local seller who let me come and look at it before I bought it and it was a business. Ebay is

I rarely buy online--anything--any site.
I've only ever done so with reputable companies through their actual website, and never for major purchases.

As for music gear--I prefer to try it out first. If I can't do that--I don't buy it.
So I might buy picks or strings online, but not guitars, amps, effects, etc.

If I wind up paying a little more--so be it. I get what I want & I know I got what I wanted.

I agree with rholloman. I have used Craigslist.org on numerous occasions, and have had good luck. I only deal locally, for Cash!! I meet them in a convenient place(Walmart parking lot, they have security cameras). Not only have I been able to sell some guitars and accessories, but I have met some really cool people that are into guitars just like me. I got a power adapter so I can plug my amp into the car lighter, and it works great. The person can hear the guitar, I don't have strangers coming to my home, and everybody is happy!! Where is the problem?? I am very careful, and follow all the anti-scamming advice available to me from Craigslist.
And yes, I am very wary of Ebay!!!
