I got a book on the CAGED system, but I'm not understanding the advantages, particularly in relation to playing chords. But in general, I just don't understand the advantages and the book isn't explaining the advantages very well.

The two relatively pointed questions I have are:
1) How is the CAGED system better than, say, playing positions for the A minor pentatonic scale?
2) How does the CAGED system help me play chords within a scale?

Maybe I'm asking the wrong questions. The reason I have an interest in CAGED to begin with is that I want to learn to navigate the fretboard better than I can now.

Hello RudyH,

I haven't subscribed to the CAGED system, but it
seems that is basicly taking open position chords
and barring them as you move up the neck. I think
it's probaly a great help to someone to become
more familiar with the fretboard. Maybe if they had
this system when I was a kid I'd be further along.
But then again maybe it's just the "new math" for
good old guitar playing. I guess If I was given a book
I would gleen any useful info I could.

Cheers.

It seems to be about variety and versatility. Instead of just being stuck with E and A style barre chords, you can get other sounds by barre versions of the other open chords (C,G,D).
