:o thats a loaded question........For my money; I gotta say Stevie Ray Vaughn was able to Portray more emotion in his playing that anyone I had ever seen…raw emotion that is…for emotion though use of modes gotta be Vinnie Moore or Joe Satriani….Just my opinion!!!

IMO there are three at the top, a second tier that has prob 20+ guitarists on it, and then everyone else.

the three who are completely interchangeable at the top are:
Hendrix
SRV
Page

the second tier includes most mentioned here already, the likes of clapton, santana, beck, etc.

Again, in my opinion the "three amigos" combine the necessary features: emotion, technicallity, and innovation that puts them at the top of the heap. While I will conceed that there may be guitarists that may exceed these three in one of those areas, I don't believe there is one out there that combines all these aspects as much as those three did individually.

Also, I get a shortness of breath when imagining that jam session...... the two jim's and stevie in a three way shred-off!

I've thought about it long enough. There are a lot of good guitarists in the "Rock" genre. But the two that I think have the broadest musical abilities are

Eric Johnson and Steve Howe.

I wanna say SRV, and Page cause they moved me to playing the guitar, but I hafta say........

Charlie Christian.

Because he had moved the guitar from the background to the foreground in Benny Goodman's Orchestra with the most mind blowing lead lines the world had ever heard on any instrument. Just listen to Solo Flight from 1941......

Yeah right, I've got to agree. This guy and all the others of this generation were the pioneers of all the great guitarists we know today and of course, those that will come along tomorrow.

I'd say the best alive is Steve Vai.

I like the Blues. I've got a tie at the top of my list. For bringing the Blues back into the heart of its rock and roll wild child, the tone, and the dexterity and the cleanness of the playing, I've got to go with Clapton. He's also excellent with chords. For the original contributions to creating solo-centered electric blues, I've got to go with BB King.

EC and BB also have plenty of technique. If you want to play across the 5th to the 8th and then 10th frets like BB on "You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now," or the 7th - 10th and 13th frets on "King of Guitar" you'll be playing with your little finger a lot. I've personally watched EC use his little finger extensively when playing with John Mayer on Good Morning America. Belive they played Crossroads, which is a Blues in A.

SRV, Hendrix, Duane Allman, Buddy Guy, are all also great players imho.

At the same time I recognize that guys like Pat Metheny and Al Dimiola are playing a more technical art. Personally, I can't play jazz in the sense that I cannot read music well enough to play down the neck while reading classical notation. I can read classical notation and play at the top of the neck. So generally I do read music in the form of guitar tab with notations of the rhythm (shuffle, etc.) and tempo. So, a lot of the Dimeola and Metheny stuff I cannot even read it to play it. My respect for them is high. My problem with jazz is a lot of the time it's less soulful, lacks the musical quality that leaves you wanting to jam along. Rock and Blues, although lacking the sophistication, somehow grabs you and never come across as just a demo of technique. Plus, I just love to play the Blues and understand it. Speaks to me. So, my nominations are for a lot of technique and musicianship and no slop, but also recognize the heart of the appeal of the Blues is the heart.

Santana, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Robin Trower, Eric Johnson, all great players too. Not the kind of legendary players that I rank at the top, and the legends are deserved - check out the CD Riding With The King for BB and EC together.
