Hi,

I have a 1986 contemporary strat that I bought second hand. It has a Fender system 1 floyd rose tremolo. One of the previous owners removed the behind the nut stringlock, and replaced it with a simple T. The guitar erratically loses its tuning (often it goes sharp !) especially if the tremolo is used, even though the trem has been locked in a position allowing it to bend only.

I bought a fender type stringlock (behind the nut), but it has three holes instead of the four original. The prev. owner already bore two new holes for the T, so although the new stringlock might cover the existing holes, I am reluctant to drill three new holes. The problem is that I have not been able to find the original stringlock, or one with four holes in the same location. Anyone know if I might be able to get a replacement part.

Alternatively, do you think If I used locking tuners, it might stay in tune. Or should I go ahead and drill three new holes and install the new stringlock ?

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks,
Dan.

Dan - Welcome to the Fender Forums.

I am the original owner of an '86 Contemp Strat. And I took my locking nut off and installed string trees in the configuration used on the American Strats at the time. I kept breaking strings using the locking nut.

The best source of info I've found on Contemporary Strats is . . .

Hope it helps. Good luck.

Hi Steve,

thanks for the reply. Sorry for the delay in responding, I seemed to have some problems replying back. I appreciate your feedback, as that probably explains why the stringlock was removed. Just one question though, can you use the floyd rose fully with regular locking tuners and keep the guitar in tune. The previous owner locked the trem in place allowing only bending (not pulling), and I would like to release it to be able to do both.

Also, any suggestions for which locking tuners I should use. I was thinking of Gotoh perhaps, but I am trying to find something the same size, that would not require drilling any new holes. Anyone know the difference between Gotoh regular locking and deluxe ?

Thanks,

Dan

If you are trying to stay Fender look at these locking tuners.

You can also try asking your local repair shop what they recommend.

To answer the question if you can use the locking tuners and the floyd, not sure but I do not see why you couldn't.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi rk,

the schaller looks good, unfortunately my guitar is black as can be. Black body, black pickguard, black neck and headstock and black tuners. So I am trying to find something to match color and size and holes...

Thanks for the link though. Here is what I found there thus far:

I found Gotoh locking tuners which comes in black:

Or Sperzel trim-lok (reverse ?) tuners. What's reverse (for left hand guitars ?):

Anyone know which one might hold out best for floyd rose trems ?

Tkx.

Dan
