Hello Gusred,

3 chords in 5 weeks fire this guy and find another.
My brother-in-law age 47 can strum a few tunes and
knows some licks and theory. He has been at it for
a few months and has a good relationship with his
instructor which is most important. He understands
his charge is to get the student to have fun and not
groom him for 10 years down the road.

Of course you must be tenacious and practice and
play the lesson correctly.

You'll get it just stay at it and see if you can find a
teacher along you own personality.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

If you can read music, buy music books. If you read tab, buy a book with tab. Learn something you want to learn to play. If you have the music on CD/MP3 to play along that will help. Fire that SOB. I hate it when someone says that they are spending good money for lessons and they are teaching slowly. Start with a simple sounding song first. My first song I learned to play was Sabbath Bloody Sabbath by Black Sabbath. Then it was For Whom the Bells Toll by Metallica. Don't give up. It's worth it.

I was in the same position as you not so very long ago Gus, learning songs from lick library dvd's, guitar magazines etc etc. I didn't feel I was getting anywhere at all, I tried a few online guitar courses too. I then decided to get serious, so I found a great music teacher. In 6 weeks the guy had me reading music for the first time in my life, a huge turn around for me. I had to start from the begining, back to basics type of thing. But... I now know my way around the fretboard, and I understand what I'm doing. This teacher uses the Mel Bays Method, it's easy to follow and has taught me some "good" habits. It might be worth a look, hope this helps.

I learned 3 chords the first time I went in for a guitar lesson. Try finding another, this guy is just drainin' your wallet. :?

Also, if you live near the SouthEast Missouri area (or close enough to a town called Dexter, MO.)... http://www.dextermusiccenter.com/web/index.php

For a tiny town...they have a very impressive store. And its a locally owned business. :D

From what you're describing......you can learn more chords, just by buying a chord book, and learning all by yourself.

Please keep to the teacher route, you will learn far more from a good instructor. It just seems you have found a bad one.

Books, DVD's etc are fine to work alongside but you can't beat one to one tuition from somebody who wants pass their knowledge along.

Unfortunately great players don't always mean great teachers

I agree. Fire the old instructor and find another.

All routes of learning to play the guitar are fine, but some are better than others. 1 to 1 is best, BUT find a teacher who will show you the basic songs and how to use these chords. In just a couple of weeks you should know a few easy songs that use 2-3 chords, "a horse with no name" springs to mind and progress from there.
but it also comes down to you and how much do you want to play.

Learn tab.

Pick songs you can reasonably learn.

Get the tab for them.

Practice along to the song, many many many times.

Do this until you can play them without any thought.

You'll start developing your musical ear, and musical vocabulary, and will then start writing and doing your own things.

Get a chord book. Learn all the basic open chords, and moveable bar chords.

Set aside a half hour to practice switching from one chord to another, in all combinations, until its second nature.

Do the same with scales.
