what have you purchased on ebay that was interesting to tell us about? i currently don't have an account, but i'll probably make one up soon... and post links to good deals you think other users might be interested in

<snip, snip>

I have almost 900 eBay transactions in the last six years. I've been both a buyer and a seller, mainly of old straight razors and fountain pens. I bought them, reconditioned them, and resold them.

This last year I bought two Stratocasters on eBay. The prices were fair. The guitars arrived OK. I had to pay for delivery, but saved twice that amount in sales tax. My selection choices were vast. Both now are all polished up, with a spot-on factory setup, and new bullet strings. Sweet ....

All the while, I had also been browsing eBay for an acoustic. Yesterday I spotted a factory-new, but rare, Takamine EF417S with a AAA-grade bearclaw spruce top and solid Hawaiian koa wood back and sides, plus a hardshell case. It is w-a-y out of my league at MSRP, but who pays MSRP for guitars? This model just went out of production, so the dealer was free to lower the price to whatever and listed it at an $800 discount. On a whim, I offered to buy it at yet another $500 below THAT listing, roughly half MSRP at that point. To my surprise, the offer was accepted. There were only about 50 of these models ever crafted at the Japan Takamine workshop. Only one or two remain for sale around the world. Without the Internet and eBay, I never would have been able to do this. What are the chances of that model ever finding it's way to my local brick-and-mortar music shop? And if it did, what are the odds of me getting it at the price I did?

I got an American Series Strat that was basically brand new off eBay for $600, and I mean it was mint condition with all the case candy. The guy I bought it from said he was selling to buy his fiance a wedding ring. I sell stuff on eBay all the time; its great.

^ nice find.... you risk getting a guitar that doesn't fall well, but you can't usually go wrong buying a new guitar for cheap unless its a dud

Luckily, this one turned out fine. Usually if I'm buying something like a guitar off eBay, I'll look for ones that are near my home, and contact the seller to see if they'll let me audition it first.

I've bought pueblo pottery, cell phones, my 96 Epiphone Les Paul, Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers, and most recently my son's Hod Rod DeVille 410. I've also bought Hot Wheels redlines (the original hot wheels from the 60s and 70s), World War II advertising (I teach History), and Disney and Hard Rock pins.
I used to sell Hot Wheels, Star Wars figures, and other assorted toys. I've never had any problems on eBay...you just have to be careful, know what you're buying and check out a seller's feedback ratings.

I love ebay. I think I'm going to start selling things on it soon. But I've been able to find anything there. I lost a piece on one of my ear buds for my ipod. I thought I was pretty much screwed out of some 40 dollars headphones, but I checked out ebay and the part was there for 8 bucks with extras. I've also picked up my graphing calculator for college and my guitar for about 200 dollars less than retail. I agree to be careful about buying guitars on ebay though. Make sure you can send it back if somethings not right.

I'm planning to eBay a guitar in the near future. Any tips on how to package it for shipping? I plan on shipping it in the tweed hard case wrapped in cardboard. Should I loosen the strings? Packing material?

I love eBay too. Haven't had a bad transaction yet.

Definitely loosen the strings. I would use some light padding between the top of the guitar and the top of the case, and perhaps some kind of wrap around the tweed case itself so it doesn't get damaged in case the box is torn.

I bought a Fender Deluxe Nashville Power Tele and a G3161 Gretch both were beauties and a good deal to boot. I've also sold a Strat and got a good price, so all in all I've had a good experience with the eBay thing so far. Roger 8)

I prefer to try before I buy. I've found some good deals on the local versions of craigslist, then tried and bought (and sold too).

For some reason I get real uneasy about buying high priced items on the bay, that said I missed out on the deal of a lifetime because of my fear. It was a PRS Modern Eagle to die for.

I still regret not taking a chance, the guy was straight up.
