Squiers are probably better quality. But since all guitars sound different, one may sound better than the other. Kinda comes down to an opinionated thing I guess. :?

I would say - flat out - Squier. I have played a bunch of Squiers in a music store lately, and I am impressed with them. The Starcaster I have played with in the local Costco. I was not nearly as taken with the Starcaster as the Squier.

Just an observation, nothing more...

If I had to choose between Starcaster and Squire, I would pick the Squire.

Don't buy the cheapie Squire either. Spend some money on the Seymore Duncan Designed pick ups. If you are trying to decide on a starter guitar, then might I suggest the Fender MIM. Very versitile. Also has better "mojo" when you play it in front of your friends.

Well, if you are looking for a guitar I think you should try every guitar in your price range that you can, then make your choice. It's about what you like the best, not anyone else.

But if this is just a simple poll, then I've never played a Starcaster so I can't have an opinion.

Exactly. What does "best" mean? Best price? Best sound? Best color? Everyone's tastes are different - so try them all out.

I've tried both of these guitars. They both stayed in tune and they felt about the same to me when playing. Both had pickups that were not very good. I ended up going for the Starcaster because of the $50 price tag and then put in a set of SD Hotrails/cool rails. Sounds really good.

To answer the question, I didn't see much difference between the two.

Squier without question.
I recently had to rebuild a Starcaster for a firends son (it just quit working) and let me tell you the quuality of the electronics was abysmal.

The Starcasters honestly are TOYS. If you are serious about playing, don't waste your money on a Starcaster. Once you gain about 4 months of skill, you will be unhappy with it and upgrade to a Squier or made in Mexico Fender anyway.

To be fair, the Starcasters are marketed as bottom end starter guitars. buying one for your 10 year old to start out on sort of makes sense. If you are buying your own instrument, and can afford it, go with a Squier or Made in Mexico Fender.

I will not disagree with mthorn00 about the electronics, since I had (OK, wanted) to replace the pickups on the Starcaster I started playing with.

But - maybe I lucked out but the body and neck of my Starcaster are impeccable. Fit, finish, and balance are great. And the neck is even birds eye maple - not enough to grade out, but enough to be evident.

I would definitely rate it above an Affinity....

When i started playing about a year ago I had intended to buy one of the Squier starter packs, then when I went to the music store they had a clearance 2006 MIM Standard Strat for $250, just more than the Squier pack.

Long story short, I got the MIM since it was exactly what I wanted. I paid a bit more for the whole set up with a Frontman 15R, cables, etc, but every penny is worth it. I've never held a more balanced guitar in my opinion. perfect weight, doesn't feel like i'm swinging around a guitar hero controller and it doesn't feel like the neck weighs 30 pounds.

and, if you ever decide to trade up, you'll have more value in the MIM than the Starcaster or Squier.

+1

Since the Starcasters in COSTCO always seem to have three rusty strings left on them, I haven't really had a chance to play one. But judging by the finish Id get a Squier. And definitly get a higher end Squier. It might be 50 more bucks out of your pocket, but it's toaltaly worth it. Same with MIM Fenders, If you're gonna spend the $400 on a Standard, you might as well drop another $150 and get a Deluxe or a Factory Special Run.
