We tend to talk a lot about the legends. Page, Clapton, EVH, Hendrix, etc., etc.
In this post, let's talk about the great guitarists that are less talked about because they play in the shadows of another band member or musician. Guys like Malcom Young or Gilby Clarke when he played w/Slash in Guns n' Roses.

I'll start off with who I feel is the most unsung of them all: Steve Cropper.
As house guitarist for Stax records in the sixties he was pretty much the guitar man behind motown. My favorite is his rhythm guitar part on Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign". I also liked his playing on Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay". He may not play much lead guitar, but he is unparallelled as a rhythm guitarist.

I'm gonna throw out the name David Sancious, crusher guitarist!!

He is also a great keyboard player! Started out with the original keyboardist for Springsteen's E Street Band. Left Bruce in the mid 70s to put together his own fusion band Tone. Killer records that have just been reissued. I recommend "Transformation".

Now a studio cat and touring back up player for a lot of players. Can be seen on Clapton's Crossroads DVD. Always has a big smile! Cat has soul!

He definitely is unsung - I haven't heard of him. But I have heard the E Street Band and they are good. Which Crossroads DVD is he on? I have Crossroads '07.

I agree there are a million of them - and Larry Carlton leads my list.

Where would the Steely Dan sound have been without him - but nobody knows his name...

My vote goes to Jesse Ed Davis. He played with everybody of his time and was highly regarded by the likes of EC, Keith Richards and a host of others. Just a short list of his accomplishments: he started out with Conway Twitty (I know, I know!), played with Albert King, John Lennon, Taj Mahal and that is his smoking solo on Jackson Browne's "Doctor My Eyes". His solo efforts include such luminaries and Dr. John, Leon Russell and Eric Clapton to name a few. He's worth a listen if you know where to look for his stuff.

Honorary mention to Tommy Bolin. He's a little more well known and not quite as prolific. Sadly neither of these great guitarists are with us today.

This one is obvious, but he always seems to get overlooked because he was on the old show "Hee-Haw" back in the day (and yes I watched probably every episode growing up).

Roy Clark. If anyone would see his solo work playing with orchestras and such, then your lower jaw would be on the floor just like mine always was...

Albert Lee, Alvin Lee (Ten Years After), Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane), Oh, and did I mention Albert Lee?

I've mentioned him in other threads but I'll say it again.
Mick Abrahms - Formerly of Jethro Tull and Blodwyn Pig.
I saw him live, a great jazz/rock/blues guitarist.

[quote="bluez81"]In this post, let's talk about the great guitarists that are less talked about because they play in the shadows of another band member or musician.

In an earlier bio of EC, the narrative moves into the time when he began to rethink how he was presently working and with whom. He is quoted as saying that he was 'tired of hearing his solos played back at him', or something to that effect.

During this period of touring they played a date in Boston. You can find their performance of "Cocaine" on YouTube, listen to and watch Tim Renwick solo.

The first time I ever heard this, you could have knocked me over with a feather. I wondered how Eric could ever let this guy loose, give hime the lead and still and save face. It was beyond me. Same on earlier recordings featuing George Terry and later on tour with Phil Palmer, a finger-style player who has also worked with Knopfler.

It goes to show you how caprice elevates some and not others. Hard to understand.

Saw Tim last night on local PBS working with Gilmour in a Pink Floyd 2004 concert in England which was an auditory and visual tour de force.

Doc

Sorry. He is on the "One More Car, One More Rider" DVD. Cool show, and I'm not even a Clapton fan! Also features Andy Fairweather-Low and drum ace Steve Gadd.

Sancious is so good he does the incredible lead guitar work for "Sunshine of Your Love". Definitely the best guitarist up on that stage. For 99% of the show he's on keyboards. He smokes on both instruments!

He was only on the first two Springsteen albums. They were buddies growing up in Jersey. His talent put him way beyond generic R&R rawk.

Ryco: You are correct! I completely forgot about Andy Fairweather Low. He's got to be the guy that most people recognize but do not know his name. Good call.

Martin Barre. Lead guitarist with Jethro Tull. The "Aqualung" album is an absolute masterpiece for rock guitarists. 8) Mike

Watching the DVD of that tour, it is elegant the way they seamlessly interweave the guitar voices for "Layla"
