I recently purchased an '08 Am. Std. P-Bass 5 with a maple fret board that was in stock at my local dealer. At the same time, I also ordered an '08 Am. Std. Jazz Bass 5 with the 3 color sunburst finish but was told that I could not get it with the maple fret board. :-( Why is this so??

You should be able to get ANY Jazz/P-bass with a maple fingerboard if so desire. I just read the page on the American Std. J-bass V and you can get them with maple fingerboards.

Although if its a finish option, you can always check out the custom shop.

This page clearly shows that Fender doesn't make one.

http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0190760705

Only the Black and Candy Cola ones are available with a Maple fretboard.
