I think the player has the most effect on the sound and the music. I seen great musicians sound really great on what most people would consider inferior equipment. I have some really good equipment, and have a really good time, but I know I do not sound as good as more talented guitarist.

your hands, your skill and your personal style affect it by far the most

then the amp

then the guitar

... in that order

Sure people who can play can a low cost instrumentand make it sound good. Still the the pickups of a guitar can change the sound. I believe the neck is the single most important thing that make a guitar sound good. The way the string acts along the neck and transfers its vibe to the body of the guitar and vise versa how the neck alows the string to vibe above the pickups not all necks do this the same. A good neck not only is a neck that feels good in your hands but has to allow these tonal things to happen.

I would say that it's a combination of the quality of the equipment and the skill level of the musician that's playing it.

Taking skill level out of it anyone can strike a chord but the guitar is what makes the chord sound good or bad. If a guitar is capable of making a tone then anyone can learn to make that same guitar make that tone. If that guitar can not make a certan tone or sound then the best player will not be able to make it do so.

Yes. Depending on what you are going "from" and "to", the change can be very dramatic. Going from my MIM Strat's ceramics to Tex Mex alnico 5s resulted in me completely re-doing my EQ. It was that big of a big change for me.

Of course it does, but it is merely just one variable ...

I second this list. I use a variety of guitars -- single coil, humbucker, active, soapbar, etc. but only two main amps. Even so, I can get just about any sound I want from any of the guitars. The sound I want though is pretty much conditioned by what I want to sound like.

The neck has an effect with me as well -- wider neck, faster neck, maybe the subtle difference between maple and rosewood. But even there, it really comes back to how I want to sound.
