With the right amp settings and fx a Strat would be excellent for metal.

Who is this 'they', and have 'they' ever heard of Iron Maiden? 3 guitarists, and they all use Strats.

Some guy named Kirk Hammett in some band called Metallica, maybe 'they' have heard of them, has been known to play Strat styled guitars often.

Also, have 'they' ever heard of Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple or Yngwie Malmsteen? Both play Strats.

Its the player that tends to make a instrument metal, and not the instrument that makes the player metal. Granted, depending on exactly what style of metal you are interested in playing perhaps a Strat may not be the best choice, but if its what you want to play, then play it. Ted Nugent used to use a Semi-hollow body guitar all the time to play great hard rocking songs like Cat Scratch Fever and Stranglehold to name a few. Flying Vs tend to be associated with metal these days, but Blues legend Albert King was playing a Flying V well before the Schenkers (in the Scorpions) and Judas Priest were putting on their first pair of leather pants.

So what I am tyring to say is, you can play just about anything with just about any guitar, its just a matter of how you play it and perhaps what you are playing it through. The great thing about music is at times there are no rules, so if you want to play metal on a Strat, who cares what 'they' say, there are no rules, and if there were rules, it would be more punk/rock/metal to break the rules anyways, so if you want to play metal through a Strat, I say do it!

This seems to pop up every now & then--it's either people who don't realize how versatile guitars can be, people with a narrow view of what defines "metal" or people trying to pick on Strat owners & fans.

I play surf instrumentals with my Fender Telecaster, and with my Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker and Les Paul Faded Double Cut. I also have a Fender Stratocaster (SSS), and of course I'll play surf instrumentals on that.
