Hmm, I don't understand.
They've sold countless albums.
They still sell. 8)

Not really. The music biz is about the dough man. Unless you are some Indie band just starting out, all mega bands are "sellouts" in one way or another. More power to them; that's what it's all about. Why does AC/DC suck? They still sound pretty good to me.

I'd be interested to find out if the band made the Wal Mart call or if it was the label doing that.

I could see the discussion being somewhere along the lines of:

Label: We'd like to make your new album exclusive to Wal Mart.

AC/DC: Why exclusive, can't we just sell it in the normal places?

Label: They also want to sell exclusive clothing lines with AC/DC emblazoned on it. Picture infants with two big flaming Hells Bells on their butts. They want to pay more to be exclusive, too.

AC/DC: Sure, whatever. we make the music, you put it out there.

Corporate Sell Out? You say that like it's unusual.

Every successful act in the world "sells out". They are in the music business to make money.

Musicians who play for: the love of music, the joy of expression, the passion that burns inside them, <insert whatever BS you like here> are the ones playing on street corners and dingy dives.

 As soon as you start taking good paying gigs playing to large numbers of people, you've started to sell out.
 As soon as you accept endorsement deals for free gear, you've sold out.
 As soon as you authorize tablature books of your songs, you've sold out.
 As soon as you accept the deal to do a "signature model" anything, you've sold out.
 As soon as your music appears in Guitar Hero or Rock Band, you've sold out.

Playing music starts out for everyone as fun, exciting, and even a passion. Somewhere along the line if it turns into a JOB that's when it becomes about money and making as much as you can.

I'm not saying that "selling out" is bad. It's just a fact.

+1 and would like to note that once you start "making it" there are other people the pay and they also have a say in what you do to make money. (i.e. Managers, Agents and Studio Execs)

Sell out? do you work for some one? Even if you work for yourself you get money from the public; and you do all you can to get all the money you can; teh band is a bunch of OLD GUYS that need to stock up on $$is that a sell out? I think getting the WORLD"S LARGEST retailer to handle your product exclusivly is one heck of a coup!

AC/DC has always sold itself to the lowest common denominator, with most of its songs being about balls, drinking and sex. Wal-Mart sells itself to the lowest common denominator. Sounds like a marriage made in heaven (or hell). The CD is probably being sold right next to the print t-shirt section. You know the ones that say things like "Back off buster, i'm having a bad day!" in some exaggerated goofy print with Yosemite Sam next to it. Goofy nonsense. "Wal-Mart, coming to wreck a town near you".

Man that's what Rock and Roll is all about; drinking, fighting, and fornicating. At least that's how it should be. Leave the "hearts and flowers" crap to the "songwriters" and "balladeers". You want to make political statements? Go be a "Folk Singer".

Rock out with your c _ ck out!
