Yeah, at first it might seem odd, but this is a business decision. I'm sure it wasn't just something like "Hey, let's sell ONLY in Walmart stores, ...".

It was probably something along the lines of "Hey, you guys have some extra songs and things not recorded yet. Why don't you put out a special edition CD just for Walmart, like Garth Brooks and a few others have done. Those seem to do well, it's something different to do, and we're still on track for the normal all-public CD soon. It's a good chance to hit a new market, do something with all those extra songs that you might never put on a normal release, and make some extra cash."

I'm in advertising and can totally see why they would do this, and have seen things like this done many times in the past. I fully agree with what they're doing, but that's just me. If you're in the business to put out music and sell CD's and make money, you'd be stupid to pass that offer up, and any manager would tell you that too.

I think the whole "sell-out" name isn't as dirty as it was long ago, and most people could care less if they're labeled that because they want to make money like the rest of the world does too. Just my opinion though, and I can totally understand yours as well.

This thread is silly. A band who has sold 10's of millions of albums has "sold out"?? This is not 1980s REM or "pre Teen Spirit" Nirvana we are discussing, is it?? Also, what about the corporate endorsements of just about every major touring group/ artist ... have they sold out?

Excellent note. If you don't want to "sell out" then never sell. Just play open mics in your town, gather a small following and play for door covers. Wait, you can't advertise too much because then you're spamming people to force them to come to your shows. Better yet, just do basement jams and free gigs.

But, if you're in the music business, then you treat it like a business and make strategic business decisions to keep the business going, and to make yourself money. Bottom line.

Wasn't Bob Dylan in a Victoria's Secret Ad last year?...

I have the album and IMO,it sounds like they're just tired of doing the same formula after so many years. You would think after 8 years off, that the album would have more of a kick than this one does. This is definately not one of their better efforts.

... and hence the reason this was a walmart-only "special edition" release of so-so songs, and not a full-blown public CD release. a good reason to unload those B songs as an easy walmart edition, push some extras and make money.

as far as the tshirts, pretty much every store I've seen (target, walmart, macy's, kohls, rue 21, etc) HAS been selling ACDC, Zeppelin and pretty much any big name rock band shirts forever, this is nothing new.

Regarding the general principle: the word professional means you make your living doing whatever it is. You want to get paid, and usually as much as possible - we're not Communists, after all (judging by what I read on some of the polititcal threads here, anyway! ).

Still, just because you do something for money doesn't mean you can't exercise judgement about what you will and won't accept payment for. You get a choice about what you endorse. I'm guessing that AC/DC have made enough over the decades their kids will get clothed and fed with or without the latest endorsement deal, so they have space to make choices.

Doesn't really bother me either way, but I kinda feel there is something a little cheesy about bad boys of rock 'n' roll putting their brand on toddler's clothes. And I'm trying to imagine Joe Strummer hooking up with a supermarket - nah, can't see it.

Next, the Hendrix range of dishwasher tablets... Oops: probably giving the Estate ideas!

ACDC is not a sell-out to me. The music goes back 20 years now- there's too much gravity in that to call them sell-outs....
It seems rediculous to me that people try to put clothes on their dogs, period. Dogs have a suit of their own- however, even as I speak, someone out there 'cant get through another day' without an ACDC sweater for their poodle.

Since Wallyworld is the largest retail seller of CD's it makes sense. The Eagles did it with their last album too. It becomes a sellout only if they altered music/words to conform to Wallyworlds standards.

Any of you guys old enough to remember when bob Dylan was accused of "selling out" because he played an electric guitar (a Strat) at Newport?

20 years?? Let There Be Rock is 30-years old. AC/DC goes back over 35 years, back to the early 70s.
