Hey my brothers! I figured that we could have our own thread to talk about all of the things that interest us here without having to step out of the guidelines of other threads and making people angry. In this thread ANYTHING GOES!!!

Ceri & Nikininja are 2 of the most intelligent people that I have EVER met anywhere when it comes not to just guitars, but music/gear/tech work and just life in general. So this can be OUR place to hang and discuss what the heck ever we want to...

Ceri: To answer some of your questions from the "Shark's Tooth" thread... Yes I actually used to own an Yngwie Malmsteen sig model, but I sold it after I was thoroughly disgusted with it. Yeah it makes speed effortless, but it seems that the speed sacrificed tone and sustain to a great degree. Hell, with all of the effects that he uses to get his tone, we'd have to pay probably $5,000 to $6,000 just to get even close to his rig minus the amps! After seeing him live I really lost a lot of respect for the man unfortunately. What he preaches is NOT what he practices (kind of sounds like a Testament album doesn't it  ?). Thank god that his rhythm section is perfect or the show would have just been a bunch of sloppy playing, guitar throwing, and pick kicking  . Anyway (can you tell that I'm still irritated?)...

No I don't have a Suhr, but I was going to buy one until I saw Nick's advice. I trust his word so I'm steering clear of that one. Yeah I've had 3 Custom Shop Jacksons that I designed and they made, but only 1 remains. The Fender neck is actually smaller, thinner, and narrower than my Jackson SLS Soloist so it did take a little getting used to, but there's still plenty of neck there to grab hold of. My Caparison had a similar neck to my Jackson, but I've already sold that one off as well.

Back to the idea that I probably like the Ibanez type necks...I'm probably, no definetly different than any other true shredder that you've ever known. I blame it on my classically trained background of 33 years. I like necks with some meat to them probably because of all the years of playing my Hand-made Alvarez Yairi classical. I really don't like ANY axe that's "Made for Shredders" because they are so easy to speed on, but lack feel, sustain, and character. More on this later...

Nikininja: Thanks for the great advice as always my friend (or "mate"). I'm not getting the Suhr now and for very good reasons. I'm sticking this Fender ride out since I'm getting old enough to be set in my ways at this point. Plus it's cool to absolutely annihilate the "shredder kids" that play their speciality axes while I'm playing my Fender Strat  . Thanks also for the reminder about the fret wire as I DID forget until you reminded me. Must be that "green" smoke, but I'll try to blame it on age :P ...I'll let you explain the difference in Fender necks to Ceri as I've already taken up a TON of space with this post. We have all the room in the world here... :D

I always found jackson necks thin thin thin wiiiiiiide but thin. The string spacing with its extra width lets you play very cleanly. Fewer string above or below catching and really helps you sound very clean and fluid. Fender necks i've always found to be much thicker so your relaxed fingers sit nearer the strings. You put less effort into moving the finger to fret a note and less effort to take it off again. Thats why i believe fender necks play faster than jacksons. The only thing wrong with em is the narrower string spacing, you have to put more effort into playing clean notes.
I tried ESP LTD as their necks are fender thick and jackson wide. It didnt work for me, it could work for you though.

Your very right not to get the suhr mate. Try blister pace on one of them and watch it disintergrate before your eyes. They are strictly tone axes. Tom anderson may be worth investigating though, hammet and a few others use his guitars and he custom builds quite cheaply so you could probably get the titanium wire put on at the start.

Anyway mate chong a fat one, see ya soon :D

Woah - hi, man! Nobody can possibly live up to that billing you gave us at the top there. Though you are not wrong about the Ninja: all his knowledge comes from tons of hands-on gigging experience. So if he says an amp sounds good, for instance - then it sounds good.

Where I thought we might be headed on the Shark Tooth thread was I was going to ask if you've ever thought about building a guitar with a luthier, as opposed to ordering from a big company. Even a Custom Shop may not be able to meet your extremely specific requirements exactly. I'm thinking of the trouble ZZDoc had getting the Fender Custom Shop to build him a Strat based on the Clapton model, but with some twists. The neck was completely wrong at first, he sent it back and got a new one - better, but still not right. And we know how much that will have cost.

Now if you had a good local luthier who was prepared to work side-by-side with you I'd think you might be able to come up with something really special and individual, and which would hopefully meet all your requirements. For instance, I've heard of people who were invited to come and try a neck several times during its making, to get the shape exactly right, down to the last pass of the wet-and-dry paper.

I feel you are a fella who needs that kind of service.

Of course, there's luthiers out there who charge monsterous prices. But there's also less famous people who nevertheless do quality work: I've seen very fine luthier built instruments done for only the price of a mid to upper production line Gibson. OK, we're not talking MIM price points; but we're not talking the cost of a car either.

And now I hear you talking about a handmade Alvarez: well, well... Have we seen pictures of that, yet?

Anyway. Bedtime, my part of the planet. See you round, man - C
