Aha :!: :!: At last our historian and recording secretary. Pehaps you would like to assume the role of analyst for the Gilmour COA Serial Number project? :P

Well done guys!

I'm up to 340, but I still don't reckon I've said anything constructive yet!

One day......

Actually, I thought you made a very useful post on Paisley Strat's Classic '50s thread. I nearly fainted with surprise - world turned upside down.

I hired a ghost writer for that one.

I haven't revisited this thread until just now, sorry. It turns out that I am in fact a statistician: numbers/analysis are my business (it's often like reading tea leaves).

Are there a lot of Gilmour serial numbers in that topic at the Custom Shop Forum? When I last glanced there, the obvious explanations of the serial numbers were disproven.

I suppose I could take a look this weekend ...

Ha! Ceri was wrong again - but how nice to be wrong. Interested to see where this goes...

Cheers - C

I found 11 DG serial numbers posted at the Custom Shop Forum thread. That is pretty impressive (11 of these expensive models here I mean).

6 were NOS, 4 were Relics, 1 wasn't stated.

The serial numbers start with R42, R43, R44 (plus three more numbers).

The single R42 number was zzdoc's, so we can believe it, but it throws a BIG wrench into early thinking of people.

I don't see how this makes any sense for people to figure out the production number of their guitar (like knowing they had the 56th NOS made).

Perhaps other Custom Shop guitar owners can tell us: are these serial number series (the R40's) unique to this CS model? Any other models start with R? If so, R1, R2, etc?

Fender has always just pulled serial numbered neck plates out of a box with no regard for order. It seems they are doing this for this model too.

There is an analysis, used in past wars to try to guess the number of tanks an enemy has, based on the numbers they see on them. I could try that when I get a few more numbers -- it would estimate the number of DGs Fender is planning on making/selling now. (Most countries now use random numbers on their military gear now because of that analysis, by the way.)

Wasn't this thread congratulating a couple of members on their new Dave Gilmour CS Black Strats?

Ceri started it anyway!
