I agree w/ the other comments about contrast. The guitar is only one of many tone influencing factors. Also to be considered is the amplifiers, effects, strings, and the no. 1 factor, the players' styles and signature sounds. (Tone starts in the soul and fingers.) Listen to the Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD from 2007 and you will find many different combinations, but they all sound great.

Also, I beg to differ with those of you who talk about the strat's skinny tone. While strats can be skinny sounding, you can get some really fat sounds too if desired. Just listen to SRV. I play in a power trio & am the only guitarist & need a wide tonal pallette. My strings play a large part in this. I use D'Addario XL's Light Top/Heavy Bottom (.010-.052) which allows for chunky rhythm and thick low note solos, especially with the neck pu. Also I can use the bridge pu and little strings for biting tone and snappy rhythm. So while the guitars are still a factor, it's more how you do it than what you use.

I play in a soul/funk band and I play an '06 Highway One strat and the other guitar player plays an SG. We both play lead and it sounds great. He does a little more slide playing than I do though.
